MID COAST LAKES:
The rainbow trout stock-
ing program will begin in
many mid coast lakes in
early February. Be sure to
check out the 2015 stock-
ing schedule for the most
up to date information.
Fishing for the various
warm water fish species
can still be productive dur-
ing the winter months but
anglers may need to target
different areas of a lake
(typically deeper) versus
when fishing in the spring
or summer.
The Sailors (3-6) were
back in their home port last
Friday after six consecutive
road games, taking on rival
McKenzie (3-5) for a chance
to move up the Mountain
West League standings with
an upset over the fifth-place
Eagles.
“It was a great night for
Mapleton basketball,” said
coach Will Crook, whose
team once again played the
entire game with the same
five starters. “The team was
just excited to finally be play-
ing in front of a home
crowd.”
The score remained close
for most of the game, with
the Sailors taking a small
lead only to have the Eagles
battle back to within a basket.

It took less than a quarter for the
Viking girls (1-2) to get the upper
hand over visiting South Umpqua (0-
3) last Friday, thanks to solid scoring
from sophomore forward Destinie
Tatum and dominant rebounding
from senior Halee Richards and soph-
omore Elyssa Rose.
Ahead 13-2 to start the second
quarter, the Viking breezed to a 55-24
win to pick up their first Far West win
and move into a three-way tie for
third place with Marshfield and North
Bend (1-2).
Tatum led scoring with 10 points
for the Vikings. Richards had nine
points and 12 rebounds. Rose had
seven points and four blocked shots
against the Lancers.
That same night, Douglas and
Brookings (3-0), defeated North
Bend and Marshfield, respectively.
The Viking boys, meanwhile, fell
behind early but battled back in the
second half to take a six-point lead
heading into the final period.
The Lancers then went on a 13-3
scoring run in the last three minutes
to move ahead and hold on to a nar-
row 42-38 win over Siuslaw.
Last night, the Vikings were at
home to host Douglas (after press
deadlines).
Friday, Siuslaw will be at North
Bend. Girls play at 6 p.m., followed
by the boys’ game at 7:30 p.m.
