aggressive and drunken driving
in the area.
Florence Police received
$5,000 in grant funding from
Oregon Impact, administrators
of DUII funding in Oregon, to
provide additional enforcement
during the holidays.
“It helps us keep additional
patrols on the street to catch
drunk drivers during the
Christmas, New Year and
Fourth of July holidays,” said
Lt. John Pitcher.
From the beginning of
December through the end of
the New Year holiday period on
Jan. 5, Florence police officers
made five DUII arrests. That is
down from seven arrests in the
same period the previous year.
LCSO counted 10 DUII
arrests, two reckless driving
arrests, and 45 related citations
from Dec. 12 through Jan. 1.
“This crackdown on DUII
driving was in conjunction
with a nationwide blitz to
reduce the number of crashes
and incidents associated with
driving under the influence of
intoxicants,” said the LCSO in
a January press release.
The Oregon Department of
Transportation (ODOT) pro-
vided specific grant funds for
LCSO to staff overtime patrols.
“Without the grant assis-
tance from ODOT, adminis-
tered by the Oregon State
Sheriff’s Association, LCSO
would not have been able to
provide the extra patrols work-
ing to reduce the injury and
incidents associated with drunk
driving and driving while
impaired,” the sheriff’s office
said.
Oregon State Police troopers
reported an increase in the
number of DUII arrests
statewide.
From 6 p.m. on Dec. 31,
2014, through 11:59 p.m. on
Jan. 1, 2015, state troopers
arrested 37 drivers for driving
under the influence of intoxi-
cants. That is up from the 29
drivers arrested during the New
Year holiday the previous year.
The
Florence
Police
Department reminds drivers to
“Drive Sober or Get Pulled
Over.” The drunken driving
prevention campaign prevents
crashes, injuries, and deaths
related to driving under the
influence of intoxicants.
