OBITUARIES
HILLIARD—Muriel Minta
(Hunt) Hilliard, 94, formerly of
Florence, passed away Jan. 5,
2015.
Muriel was born Nov. 23,
1921, to Charles Henry Hunt
and Minta
Sheldon
Hunt,
at
University of
California
Hospital, San
Francisco.
When she
was
six
months
old,
Muriel Hilliard
M u r i e l
moved with her parents to
Bandon, Ore., with the trek
from Coquille to Bandon being
by sternwheeler.
She lived in Bandon until
1927, when the family moved
to Coquille, where her father
was a deputy sheriff. She
attended grade and junior high
school in Coquille until 1933,
when they moved to Eugene
and she attended Woodrow
Wilson Junior High School,
Eugene High School and
University of Oregon.
In 1941, she moved to San
Francisco, the city she loved.
That same year, she married
Harold Bour and they had a
daughter, Jacqueline Olivia
Bour (Peterson).
Muriel lived at Fort Winfield
Scott during World War II, and
worked as a civilian employee
at both Fort Scott and Fort
Baker Hospital.
In 1947, she moved to Fort
MacArthur, Calif., where she
worked as an unemployment
insurance examiner for the
State of California. In 1949,
she moved to Eugene, where
she was a legal secretary. That
same year, she divorced Harold
Bour, reverting to her maiden
name of Hunt.
In 1953, she married
Michael Anthony Ward, who
had children Mary Ann Ward
(Keown), Michael James Ward
(deceased) and John Stephen
Ward.
Michael Ward and Muriel
had four children: Charles
Anthony Ward, Patrick Henry
Ward, Kathleen Joan Ward and
Robert Thomas Ward.
Upon the death of her hus-
band, Michael Ward, on May
23, 1964, Muriel became a
member of the Myasthenia
Gravis Foundation, being the
only member residing outside
of Portland.
She married Robert Seldon
“Sel” Hilliard in 1967. He died
in 1989.
Muriel joined the American
Legion Auxiliary in 1951, serv-
ing for 64 years. She was pres-
ident of Eugene Unit No. 3 and
held several department chair-
manships.
After moving to Florence,
she became very involved in
Florence Unit No. 59. While
serving as District No. 3 presi-
dent, she met Les Whittle, who
was serving as District No. 3
commander, and they became
longtime companions.
While living in Florence,
Muriel was very active in civic
affairs, serving six and a half
years on the West Lane
Planning Commission, two of
those years as president.
She was vice president of the
Oregon Shores Conservation
Coalition for eight years.
Muriel loved the coast and
Heceta Beach, referring to it as
God’s country.
Contributions can be made
in her memory to either the
Myasthenia Gravis Foundation
or Cystic Fibrosis, in care of
DeMoss-Durdan

She married Dorman “Al”
Carter in 1949.
After his early death in
1956, she completed a graduate
degree in Public Health from
U.C. Berkley.
Jeanne worked as a school
nurse in Sonoma County,
Calif., where her three children
grew up.
When Jeanne left nursing
school, she studied and prac-
ticed alternative healing meth-
ods, such as biofeedback thera-
py, and worked with Jerry
Jampolsky on A Course in
Miracles in the San Francisco
Bay Area.
Later, she moved to the
Seattle, Wash., area and com-
pleted ministerial education
studies at the Unity School for
Religious Studies during sum-
mers.
Prior to and after her ordina-
tion as a unity minister, she
worked as a chaplain at
Western State Hospital in
Washington, as well as contin-
uing her lifelong profession as
a nurse and administrator in
nursing homes and working
with the mentally ill.
Jeanne’s last employment
before retirement was in
Florence, and it was there she
met Bill McConnell, a locally
known marine biologist and
naturalist.
They married and lived a
happy and full twenty years
together in Florence. Jeanne
had always enjoyed backpack-
ing, camping, traveling, music
and reading.
Her great love was the
Pacific Ocean, so Florence and
the Oregon Coast became her
true home.
She was preceded in death
by her husband William “Bill”
McConnell, her parents and her
older brother.

dren: Janet Carter O’Donovan

1949, then
joined the Air Force in June
1949.
At the rank of sergeant, he
traveled overseas to Korea in
May 1952, serving as a radio
technician. He was exposed to
dangers on the front line during
his service, as real-time com-
munication was vital to the sur-
vival of fellow soldiers.
Later, Jim worked in the
Civil Service for 41 years, trav-
eling overseas to dozens of
countries, assisting the U.S.
government using his electron-
ics skills and knowledge.
In retirement, Jim developed
a passion for woodworking and
building guitars. He loved
mushroom picking, watching
westerns and Gene Autry films
and tinkering with electronics.
He fished on the sunny days,
and cooked his catch when it
rained. He loved spending time
with family and friends, and in
his time alone he always had a
project to work on. He never
left a tool out of place in his
shop.
In the final three years of his
life, Jim fell ill, but still lived
his life to the fullest he possi-
bly could, far outlasting the
months projected by his doctor.
He did not want to leave
God’s earth, nor leave wife
Vonda alone.
Jimmy and Vonda Lou were
very much in love. Jim often

Hugs were often seen, and “I
love you” frequently spoken. A
living, loving example for
those spending time with them.
Jim was a gift. He was
incredibly kind and helpful,
full of life and common sense,
and an endless, loving heart.
He was an example-setter, a
loving husband and an inspira-

missed by all.
He is survived by his wife,
Vonda Lou; his children:
Joseph and Maria, George,
Vincent, Shari, Linda, Larry,

still, remembering God is with
us, and in control.
We will endlessly love you,
as you loved us. Goodbye, with
