SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 21, 2015 Sailors © is brought to you by these participating sponsors: from 1B whom had double-doubles against the Indians. “We were able to establish an early lead due to our hustle and speed in transition,” said Crook. “Plus, Tucker did a lot of damage from the free throw line.” Ford scored nine of his 19 3 B points from the foul line, while Free was hot from the field. As the Indians focused on Free and Ford, freshman Dominic Wells and sophomore Tyler Packebush were able to take advantage of breaches in the Mohawk defense. “They got a lot of wide open shots,” said Crook,” and they made the most of them.” Both players had season-best performances, with 10 points for Wells and five points for Packebush. “Our defense shut down Mohawk and we controlled the tempo in the second half,” said Crook. “That ran a lot of clock time and helped us stay fresh down the stretch.” Ford led scoring with 19 points, 14 rebounds and one steal. Free had 15 points, 12 rebounds and three steals. Wells had 10 points, four rebounds and one steal. Packebush had five points and one rebound. Sophomore Hunter Simington had one point, three rebounds and a pair of steals. “It was a good team win,” said Crook. Friday, the Sailors will host McKenzie, beginning at 6 p.m. leader and anchor of the girls’ team, holding down the fifth and key 10th frames in the Baker System of scoring (each of the five girls rolls two frames per game). “There’s a lot of pressure on the anchor bowler,” said Anderson. “But Abby handles it well.” Neil Devera and Evan Johnson lead a freshman-domi- nated boys team, which includes Kaleb Haggard, Patrick Hill and Logan Lindner. Sophomore Tyler Cater is the only non-freshman. “The boys are doing fine as freshmen, they’re just young,” said Anderson. Only the top two boys teams and top two girls teams in dis- trict advance to the state tour- nament, set for Feb. 20-22, at AMC Firebird Lanes in Salem. There are no classifications in high school bowling. All qualifying schools, big and small, compete in the one tour- nament. “The girls have a good chance making it (to states), now that they know that they can make the finals (of regular- season tournaments),” said Anderson. “It’ll be tougher for the boys, but they’re a talented group.” Competition begins at 8 a.m. Sunday at Firs Bowl, at 1950 River Road in Eugene. Win or lose, the teams will celebrate after the tournament with either laser tag at Putters or a visit to Get Air Eugene, the recently opened trampoline park. And win or lose, Anderson knows he’ll have a good group coming back next year, and the year after — and the year after. “These kids should be really good their junior and senior years, if they stay at it,” he said. “They’ve all been bowl- ing junior league for years, and they could be very, very good.” system last summer created backlogs for boaters who were transferring titles and register- ing during the already busy summer months. As a result of extensive transactions sent through the mail, particularly boats that have not been registered recently or those coming from out-of-state, staff are entering the data into the new system manually. Staff and boaters have also had to work through the techni- cal difficulties of a new sys- tem. This led to an increased backlog of boat transactions, which most boaters are not accustomed to experiencing from the agency. For quick turn-around on boat registration renewals, boaters are encouraged to renew online. Online boat registration renewals are immediately processed when payment is approved and printed the same or next day for mailing. Boaters should be aware that the new online interface has additional safety measures built in that can be confusing, so it is important to read and follow the directions closely. “The new system is up and running, but we are still work- ing with our contractor to improve functionality while our staff are becoming more proficient with the user inter- faces,” said Janess Eilers, Title and Registration Manager for the Marine Board. “Over the past few months we have brought on temporary staff and had registration specialists work overtime to catch up the on the backlog, so while we are happy with the progress, we will continue to have some inconvenience for those who are accustomed to faster serv- ice.” The Marine Board, working with marine law enforcement, will honor any temporary per- mits that expired until the agency is caught up with the transaction backlog.
