Siuslaw High School’s
girls and boys bowling teams
are both in a groove as they
head to the state qualifying
tournament Sunday, Jan. 25,
at Firs Bowl in Eugene.
“The kids are getting a lot
better every week, a lot bet-
ter,” said coach Dusty
Anderson. “They had their
highest four-game sets this
(past) weekend.”
The girls advanced to the
finals, finishing fourth, and
the boys placed sixth among
13 schools in last Sunday’s
final regular-season meet at
Firs Bowl — the Eugene
house that also will host this
weekend’s District 4 qualify-
ing tournament.

Things went fast and furiously dur-
ing Saturday’s Nick Lutz Invitational
at Siuslaw, where the Vikings hosted
16 other teams from multiple divisions
for a full day of wrestling that ended
early due to dominating performances
on the mats.
“We had some teams and several
wrestlers who pinned their way
through the meet,” said Siuslaw coach
Neil Wartnik. “That, and smaller ros-
ters overall meant that finals started
earlier than normal by about an hour.”
When the final whistle blew and the
winning arm of the last wrestler was
raised to the crowd, the Vikings had
claimed three individual titles and
fourth place overall.
“We did pretty well for having only
five wrestlers on the mats,” said
Wartnik. “Our guys really stepped
up.”
Freshman Ricky Huff, wrestling in
the 106-pound bracket, pinned his way
through the meet, including a rematch
with a nemesis from Grants Pass.
“The last time the two tangled,
Ricky had to really battle,” said
Wartnik “This time, Ricky demolished
him.”
At 120 pounds, junior Jose
DelaMora went undefeated, winning
each match by pin to earn the bracket
title as well as Most Outstanding
Wrestler in the middleweight division.
Fellow junior Isaiah Burkhalter
continued his dominance at 138
pounds by winning each of his match-
es by pin to take the bracket title.
The Vikings also got third place
from junior Dylan Jennings at 285
pounds, and fourth place from sopho-
more 220-pounder Kainan Lane.
“Even though the teams were small-
er in terms of numbers, the competi-
tion was tough,” said Wartnik. “Our

As the Sailors’ five starters took to
the hardwood at Mohawk last Friday
night, they knew there would be no
relief from the bench.
No one else was suited up.
“We knew we needed to control the
tempo if we wanted to have any
chance of staying fresh,” said
Mapleton coach Will Crook. “Our
guys did a great job of doing that.”
Key to Mapleton’s success against
Mohawk were the efforts of seniors

The Vikings opened the Far West
League season on the road Friday, tak-
ing on the Pirates at Marshfield. In the
girls’ game, the Vikings kept things
close for the first three quarters with
shooting from sophomore guard
Destinie Tatum leading Siuslaw.
But a concentrated attack in the
fourth quarter jettisoned the Pirates
into the lead before taking the win, 58-
26.
Tatum led the Vikings with 10
points.
In the boys’ game, Siuslaw came
out strong in the opening period,
building a six-point lead off the shoot-
ing arm of senior Joseph Dotson.
Marshfield went on to dominate the
next three quarters to secure a 73-48
win.
Dotson led Siuslaw with 17 points.
The Vikings will host South
Umpqua on Friday, then Douglas
Tuesday night. Girls tip off at 6 p.m.,
followed by the boys at 7:30 p.m.
Marine Board begins web-based registration
After 25 years of service, the Marine
Board’s previous titling and registra-
tion system reached the end of its use-
ful life and was retired. The Marine
Board made the transition to a web-
based titling and registration system
that has more functionality, more secu-
rity and brings more online options for
boaters.
The new registration system com-
bines the old mainframe data with
boater education, AIS permits and the
Outfitter/Guide /Charter databases into
one, integrated system.
The customer interface, “RegLine,”
allows boaters to log in and manage
their contact information, as well as
apply for boat title and registration and
renew or order replacement
