DAV commander to speak at City Club
David Stitts, also known as,
“Skip,” commander of the
Disabled American Veterans
(DAV) Florence chapter 23,
will be the featured speaker at
Florence City Club Jan. 16.
The Disabled American
Veterans are a part of the
Veterans Affairs (VA), bill WD
5398, that was signed in 1930
by President Herbert Hoover.
The bill consolidated federal
veterans programs and elevat-
ed them to a federal adminis-
tration.
As noted in the U.S.
Department of Veterans Affairs
history, “The United States has
the most comprehensive sys-
tem of assistance to veterans of
any nation in the world, with
roots that can be traced back to
1636, when the Pilgrims of
Plymouth Colony were at war
with the Pequot Indians. The
Pilgrims passed a law that stat-
ed that disabled soldiers would
David Stitts
be supported by the colony.”
Stitts will talk about the
many organizations that are
under the U.S. Department of
Veterans Affairs and their cur-
rent programs, eligibility and
services to veterans.
In addition, he will speak
about how the DAV fits in with
the Veterans Affairs.
His talk will include the
relationship between organiza-
tions such as Wounded Warrior
Project and VA and DAV, and
which organizations are more
likely to be really helping vet-
erans rather than self serving.
Stitts prefers to answer ques-
tions about the Veterans Affairs
legislation and how its services
are rendered. For this reason,
he aks that those attending the
meeting honor his request for
not asking questions about his
military service and how he
became a disabled veteran.
The City Club program
begins at noon at the Ocean
Dunes Golf Links, 3345
Munsel Lake Road.
A limited lunch menu is
available for purchase prior to
the program.
For more information, call
Roger Johnson at 541-902-

Some people also keep salt in their cars -- if
your car is stuck in snow or on ice, sprinkling
salt in front of your tires can offer some more
traction and get things moving.
Make sure your tires are operating safely and
efficiently.
