On Sept. 2, Siuslaw High
School principal Kerri Tatum
met her more than 400 stu-
dents as she and her staff wel-
come incoming freshmen and
new students during the
school’s Link Day. She was
assistant principal last year and
was chosen by the Siuslaw
School District to replace Matt
Henry, who accepted the posi-
tion of school administrator for
the Gervais School District.

Center Sept. 17, when an aux-
iliary officer arrived carrying a
pipe bomb in his marked car.
A woman walking her dog dis-
covered the explosive device
near Highway 101 and took it
to the officer at a nearby gas
station on 22nd Street. The
officer then transported the
object to the Justice Center at
Greenwood and Ninth streets,
where it was immediately shut
down and the Eugene Police
Department Bomb Squad was
dispatched to deactivate the
bomb. No one was injured.

Lane County deputies arrest
a Deadwood man Oct. 30 after
receiving information that he
was a New York state fugitive.
About 20 years ago, an arrest
warrant was issued for John
Franklin Forbis, now 72,
because he had been caught
with more than 800 pounds of
drugs and had been involved
in smuggling drugs by air from
Texas to New York. He fled
the state and apparently has
been hiding in Lane County
under an alias name for the
last two decades.
