Lights out
Siuslaw Valley Fire and
Rescue completes a two-month
training exercise by burning
down the old Charl’s restau-
rant, which according to busi-
ness license records first
opened in 1981. The property,
sitting at Highway 101 and
25th Street, was sold to the
Western Lane Ambulance
District and may be the future
site of its ambulance facility.
Bang the drum
Drummers and dancers rep-
resenting various different
tribes from around the Pacific
Northwest celebrate native tra-
ditions, including honoring
tribal elders and military veter-
ans, during the 21st annual
Powwow hosted by the Indian
Education program at Siuslaw
Middle School.
Up in smoke
Florence City Council votes
unanimously to adopt an ordi-
nance that sets a one-year
moratorium on issuing busi-
ness licenses for medical mari-
juana dispensaries in Florence.
Though the councilors in gen-
eral supported allowing the
dispensaries, they voted the
moratorium in to give the city
more time to do research and
to see what other cities around
the state plan to do.

The doctor is out
Up to 1,000 patients lose
their primary care doctor, and
as many as 100 took to the
streets to line up and protest at
PeaceHealth Peace Harbor
Medical Center after Dr. John
Egar is fired in late April. Egar
said the termination is a form
of retaliation by the hospital
for his letters to the Siuslaw
News that spoke of his con-
cerns in regards to health care.

Incumbent Jay Bozievich
will not face a runoff election
against opponent Dawn Lesley
for West Lane County com-
missioner, according to the
certified recount results
released by Lane County
Town, adding to its mystique.
Under the expert guidance of
skipper-owner Ron deRonden-
pos, the reproduction of a turn-
of-the-20th century three-mast-
ed baroque rigged ship has
been a six-year labor of love.
The ship was originally a steel
hulled stern-ramp
trawler built in
1966.
Elections on June 19.
Bozievich received 7,708 votes
compared to Lesley’s 7,634,
enough to prevent a runoff in
the fall.
Three Rivers, 10 years
This month marks the 10th
anniversary of the opening of
Three Rivers Casino and
Hotel. To commemorate this,
they held a number of special
events, including a blackjack
tournament and a Bingo Bash.
Owned and operated by the
Confederated Tribes of the
Coos, Lower Umpqua and
Siuslaw Indians, the original
casino opened in June 2004 on
a 98-acre facility consisting of
a single tent-style structure
with 265 slot machines and a
small restaurant.
