Most fish have migrated onto the spawning grounds. ALSEA RIVER: Chinook, steelhead Winter steelhead season is underway with reports of some steelhead being caught from the lower river up to the hatchery. Good numbers of fish typically start returning over the next few weeks. R OGUE R IVER BOYS : 43 S IUSLAW BOYS : 41 Siuslaw moved one step closer to the start of league competition over the week- end, taking to the road for a matchup with the Chieftains of Rogue River for the sec- ond time this season. In the girls’ game, the Vikings, who defeated the Chieftains by 11 points at home last month, picked up their second win over Rogue River by a smaller margin, 58-49. For the boys, it was once again the nailbiting, down-to- the-wire game against Rogue River. S TORY & PHOTO BY N ED H ICKSON Siuslaw News The Vikings’ small wrestling roster continued to get big results last Saturday, with Siuslaw bringing home six individual medals — including three tournament titles — from the multi-divisional Riddle Invitational. At 106 pounds, freshman Ricky Huff dominated his weight class to take the bracket title. Juniors Isaiah Burkhalter and Jose DelaMora also brought home tourney titles, with Burkhalter winning the 138-pound division, and DelaMora winning the 120-pound bracket. The Viks also had three top-four finishes at Riddle, with sophomore heavyweight Kainan Lane placing second at 285 pounds. Junior 195-pounder Cody Wells and fellow junior Dylan Jennings, wrestling at 285 pounds, each placed fourth at the 17-team tourney ment. Thursday, Siuslaw will return to the mats for a Far West League four-way dual meet at Marshfield High School against the Pirates, as well as Douglas and South Umpqua. Matches begin at 4 p.m. Saturday, Siuslaw will participate in the nonleague Central High School four-way meet, which will include teams from Central, Banks and Amity high schools, beginning at noon. Noon Ocean salmon topic of tonight’s STEP meeting Ocean salmon fishing off the Oregon coast will be explored at tonight’s meeting of the Florence Salmon and Trout Enhancement Program (STEP). The group meets at 7 p.m. at the Elks’ Lodge on 12th St. The public is invited to attend. Eric Schindler, project leader for the ODFW Ocean Salmon Management program, will be the guest speaker. Schindler will summarize last year’s ocean program, comparing it to other years’ salmon production. He will also look ahead to this year and give some projections on what anglers might expect. Salmon regulations for the upcom- ing season won’t be finalized until the end of April by the Pacific Fisheries Management Council. Ocean chinook is still scheduled for a March 15 opening this year, subject to change. Prior to Schindler’s talk, the club will hold a short business meeting. Volunteers with the group were sched- uled to put the weir in place on Whittaker Creek and open the steel- head trap.
