SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, JANUARY 3, 2015 3 A Local officials share New Year’s wish lists C OMPILED BY T HERESA B AER Siuslaw News Siuslaw News staff have spoken with many people in recent days about their plans for the new year. 2015. It’s got a nice ring to it, don’t you think? It turns out, however, that the tradition of making New Year’s resolutions seems to be fading. Still, several Florence and Dunes City officials stepped up and shared their ideas and hopes for the coming year. Following are their contribu- tions. Best wishes to all in 2015. My top resolution is to make myself, my family and Lane County more resilient. I want to be more prepared for natural disasters and economic upheavals. I am going to take better care of my health through diet and exercise. I plan on preparing my home with food, water and alternate energy sources. I hope that we as Lane citizens can prepare our infrastructure and emergency services to better handle a potential subduction zone earthquake. I find it more productive to take the time to reflect on the proj- ects that worked well and ana- lyze why or on those that didn’t turn out so well and why not. Then I try to learn from those experiences to help with future endeavors. I find that I learn most from those things that were hard and not so successful. Maybe because I think more about why they didn’t work. But in any case, I think that all of these are opportunities to learn and grow. Isn’t that what we are meant to do? This year will be the first in 10 years during which the city won’t be my main focus, so I’m looking forward to more family time, working on my hobbies of sewing and paper crafting and maybe learning to play my beautiful piano. I have so very much to be grateful for and I hope to find a way to share that with others. Nola Xavier Florence Mayor I am optimistic that our new council will share in creating a unified vision, which sets the course for the next 15 years, with achievable goals to be accomplished every year mov- ing forward, a series of changes designed to mold our commu- nity into that desired vision for Florence and the surrounding area. We all agree economic development is essential to expand our town but what form will it take? We are going to look at how to maintain our quality of life while attracting working class entrepreneurial people to relocate here, while Jay Bozievich Nola Xavier Joshua Greene Joe Henry Sue Roberts Susy Lacer Lynn Lamm Mike Miller Robert Forsythe Rebecca Ruede Jamie Mills Ed Scarberry Not shown are George Lyddon and Sheldon Meyer. We need to attract a younger popu- lation to energize our base. I personally believe that we could make “Celebrate the Arts” a directive and let the arts be an economic generator. Start with a massive public art pro- gram that hires some of the greatest artists in the world to adorn our city with amazing must-see works! The city should put in place financial incentives through federal, state, county and city to aid in the investment needed to retrofit our commercial spaces only for artists. The city should take the initiative to hire the U of O architectural students to show some exciting conceptual examples of what could be built on our larger available foot- prints, the Boardwalk, the Lotus, across from the FEC and the old school on 101. This will become a message to investors to take us seriously and that we are open to growing in a partic- ular way. We can set the course in 2015. In the short term it must be our No. 1 prior- ity to hire a new city manager and in turn a new police chief. We have gone much too long without those two critical posi- tions being filled. Over the next two years I would like to see our efforts focused on econom- ic development, street mainte- nance, cost control and forming partnerships with other stake- holders in the area to help to accomplish these goals.
