Pisell, has been visiting with his daughter Mrs Wm. Himelwright of Freeze out, for some days. Mr. Purcell chitns to have built the second lop cabin in the Park 18 years ago. The first he says was built by Cox & Roland at the mouth of Grouse Creek on J. F- Rich's homestead The Purcell cabin was built on the Imnaha river in a grove of century pines just above the saddle. This cabin stands on the homestead oi J. A. Blevans. Both of these his- t ric cabins are still standing, hut like tlieir builders they are fast falli ig into decay. Mrs. Marion Coverdile loaned lier saddle pony a few days ao to a fru-nd to ride out to Joseph. Whibj crossing the Imnaha-Shccp cr-k divide in a fearful snow storm Mr. Lynch lost hi geograph ical bearings and slid the borrowed poiiy to its death. The first snow of the season tell o-i the lSth. The watch mines of Representative Moody in committee on Indian affair ha pre, vented another land grabbing acliero of the first water slipping in the Indian appropriation bill aa an innocent-looking amendment. Just as the House committee was about to re port the bill, Acting Chairman Curtis presented an amendment which he said was recommended by the Indian Office, providing that, where Indian respirations, created subsequent to transcontinental railways, were foutid to embrace alternate sections belong ing to such railroals, the companies should have the right to relinquish these sections and select in lieu there of lands of equal area land, in the dublij domain, either from the sur veye ! or unsurveyed land. i . Moody recognized iht this was a provision even more sweeping tl an the forest reserve lieu selection wan proving and so informed the commit tee. After its evil effects were pointed out, the (revision was sent back to the Indian OIKce with a request that the Commissioner frame an amend ment, either proposing to purchase th we land direst from the Indians or permit an exchange in an equitable basi . As he pursmd the case further Mr. Moody found that the legislation was suggested by one of the land grant roads which owns over a million and a half acras of laud in Indian reser vation in New Mexico and Arizona, lands not over 1 cent an acre, but which under the proposed legislation could bi exchanged for land worth $10 an acre an I more. This is only one of several roads that would bene fit. Now' that the purpose of the inno cent looking provision is known, there is little danger of its incorporotiou in the bill. Who Ine railroad attorneys ! laid their case before the department they crossly misrepresented the facts j and managed to throw a blind over : ttie eyes of Indian Ollice oflicials. j fl Had it not been for Mr. Moodv, this M Sacred Heart Academy LaQrand, Ore.
