Oirgonian New Bureau, Washing
ton, Nov. IS On recommendation of
the Geological Survey, the Secretary
of the Interior today ordered the
withdrawal of two additional Uxlies of
land in Eastern Oregon, with a view
to the creation of forst reserves.
The one tract embraces the Towder
River Mountains and contiguous
country, about 250 townships in all
and extends from the Snake river on
the east to a point a few miles cast of
I nion and Cove on the east, the
withdrawal King boot shaped, with
the toe turned north. The towns of
Cornucopia and Medical Springs are
about four miles south of the southern
extremity of the withdrawal, while
the City of Enterprise, as well as
Wallowa Lake, have been excluded
on the north jrom the original recom
mendation of the Geelogical Survey.
Many private entries hue Wen ex
cluded. This withdrawal is also rec
ommended by Congressman-elect
Williamson.
The second withdrawal embraces
about 14 townships lying along tho
northern end of the Blue Mountain
range, following the Union and Uma
tilla County line, embodying all tin-o:.-upied
publfc timber lands and the
headwaters of many small streams
tributary to the Grand Konde and
Umatilla Rivers. This withdrawal
also extends into Washington, where
it embraces about 13 townships in
Asotin and Columbia Counties, being
northern extremity of the Blue Moun
t.iin range. Practically all oi the
land included within tin se withdraw
als is unsuiviyed. None of the low
lands valmbls for agricultural pur
poses have been ii. eluded, and, as far
as pcs-ihle, all lands covered ly di
mes, of one form or another, have
been excluded. It is probable that
the Presidential proclamation which
will finally create these reserves will
eliminate all but public lauds from
the final reserves, which are contem
plated much to preserve the water
supply as to preserve the timber.
