Roadj and Trade
Not only do good, permanent
highways save the farmer, miner
n i:d producer from extra expense
in transportation, but good roads
make permanent markets and keep
prices even the year round, saving
the farmer from the clutches of the
storage warehouse man. who is on
the railroad track or at the boat
landing, and to whom the farmer
or producer must deliver when
road? are passable, borro-,v a little
money, pay high stoiage charges
and finally, perhaps, sell at a loss
p.t the will of the creditor, says the
Raker City Democrat. With good
Vuads, the farmer can store his
crops in his own barns and haul to
the railroad station whenever he
chooser- to sell, taking advantage
of market prices, which under such
conditions are always better, save
jnturcit and storage and come out
at t!i- end of the year with a prolh
that will more than pay his share
oi the co.-t of permanent road build
ing instead of charging'tip losses
on Iih ledger. Oregon farmers are
le.v. niii the lesson, and liaker will
icad in the good road movements
iu Eastern Oregon. It is simple
when you know how and work on
right lines.
There is a great discussion
throughout Eastern Oregon as to
the merits of the proposed Forest
Reserve. The mining interests of
i:aker and Grant counties have
taken the lead in such a manner
t!i:it it cannot bo overlooked. Lut
upon investigation welind that the
resj-ve in no way interferes with
mines now in operation or that
mav hereafter be discovered. In
tact the land ia just us free to the
prospector on the reserve as it is
on any other goverment land.
iler.ee tht kick of the mining men
seems to be not well taken. As to
in'1 stoe interests
the theory of
ernn'.U
!g stock to graze within
the rci-.-rvc is all rilit, and it re
mains to be seen whether the prac
tice will hear it out. The one ob
jectionable feature is that it will
necessitate the issuance of more
land script. This we understand
will be prevented to as great an
extent as possible but if theoflicials
are not careful some big milling
company will be included in the
.-. serve ami as soon as they denude
1 heir private land holdings of the
timber they will turn it back to
the government and receive script,
in return with which they will be
a bio to go to some other locality
and buy more good timber land.
1 he opponents of the Blue Moun
tain reserve may thank Malcolm
A. .Moody for interceding with the
government oHieials and pursuad
ii g them to make the boundaries
of tnu reserve temporary instead of
permanent which will enable the
opponents to state their objections
to the proposed boundaries and if
valid have the wrong righted be
fore it is too late.

PULLMAN ORDINARY
SLEEPERS.
The tourist travel between the
East and the Pacific Coast has
reaeheil enormous proportions in
the last few years, and calls for a
seccial class of equipment. To
meet this demand the Pullman
Company has issued from its shops
what it technically calls the "Pull

cars appear similar to the regular
sleepers being bnilt on the same
plan, but not furnished with the
Mime elegance. They are equipped
with mattresses, blankets, sheets,
pillows, pillow-cases, towels, combs,
brushes, etc., requiring nothing of
the kind to be furnished by the
passenger. Each car has a stove
for making tea and coffee and elo
ing "'lijiht housekeeping," and each
section can be fitted with tin ad
justable table. A uniformed por
ter accompanies each car, bis busi
neta being to make np berths,
Kep the car clean, and look after
