On the early morning of the 29th

Both sawmills are idle in this
vicinity for want of logs on the

The peach crop on the Upper
Imnaha will be very light not
enough to meet home demand.
Roasting ears, bacon and beans
arc now on cur daily dinner bill
of fare with blackberries and huck
leberries as dessert.
N. Johnson the hero of a bund
red battles and many scars is erect
ing a turning lathe near the Ten
dance of L. G. Page. Mr. Johnson
will not only manufacture turned
wares but he will do a general
eioperage business also.
A crew of volunteer laborers be
gan work last Monday on the
bridge to span the Imnaha rive',
near the mouth of Freezeout creek.
There will be two abutments and
two piers. The center span of the
bridge will be fifty feet long. The
County Court generously approp
riated vl75 with which to purchase
material. The bridge when com
pleted will contain no Pess than
15,009 feet of lumber including all
wood wot I:. John A. Bleavans is
supervising the work.

Farmers generally all over the
Lower Valley are reporting good
yields of grain.
C. T. McDaniel has purchased
the U. K. Wibon residence prop
erty near the mill and moved into
it Tuesday. Consideration $1000.
S. G. Neville is in Willamette
Valley with a view of finding a
location.
J. M. Powers,of Appleton, Minn.,
arrived in town Monday and will
have charge of the public schools
in this chy this year.
A number of the citizens turned
out Tuesday and improved the ap
pearance of the cemetery by burning
off the tall grass.
B. M. Lombaid, a capitalist of
Portland, formerly a member of
the Lombard Investment Co., was
in the city Tuesday. He thinks
that Wallowa county is a fine
place and he thinks we may fuMv
expect a boom next spring. The
Harriman system advertising and
exotirsion rates he believes will
greatly increase the population of
Oregon during the next year.
The city council is considering
the proposition of socuring adequate
water supply for fire protection and
domestic use. They figure that
water can be brought from Bear
creek at a cost of $8000. Whether
it will be raised by a company or
bonding the city has not yet been
decided.

of Alder Slope was herding sheep for

two bears got among the sheen durintr
the night and caused a stampede of
the sheep. David went out with a I!8

cub and not seeing it came at David.
