The Colonel Starts the Spadework
It s Great To Be Soldier
The indominitable spirit of the
American soldier today and just
what he thinks about being jerked
out of a well-paying swivel chaired
job and donning the olive drab of
the army at $50 a month is de­
scribed in a new marching song
which is being sung every morning
by members of the division head­
quarters company as they swish
down the streets of Camp Adair.
Both words and music for the num­
ber were written by Private Cecil
Birnkrant who titled it, “It’s Great
to Be a Rookie in the Army.”
From all outward indications, the
song may become one of the most
popular airs to come ,out of. this
war. The tune is catchy and the
words are easily memorized. They
are as follows:
It’s great to be a rookie in the
army. It’s fun to join my buddies
at the camp.
There seems to be a job to do—
let’s do it,
And surely there’s no reason why
We can’t.
I get a thrill when I think I'm
a part of a team that never fails
to take the lead.
And boy, I want to be right in
the heart of the most important
thing this country needs.

Before >ntering the army. Pri­
vate Birnkrant was connected for
many years with the theater in De­
troit, Chicago, and New York city
where he produced stage shows and
musical comedys. His latest feature
was a short musical for Gene
Krupa which he wrote for the na­
tionally famous trap drummer in
Hollywood. It is called “Drumming
Up Production.”
Private Birnkrant is the second
member of his immediate family
to enter the armed services. A
brother is stationed in Culver City,
California, where he is a first
lieutenant in the army.

New Fire Inspectors
Join Camp Department
The Chinese method of <u ,—

perfected by the post fire depart­
ment when six fire inspectors went
to work Monday.
The men will work out of each
of the six Camp Adair fire stations
and will serve under fire prevention
bureau of the fire department*
whose force is now completely up
to strength for the number of com­
panies now in service, it was an­
nounced by Fire Chief, A. L. Sherk.
Inspectors will work in coopera­
tion with officers in command of all
the différant companies, to take all
complaints regarding existent fire
hazards.

This did not happen at Camp
Adair.
When 48 nurses arrived re­
cently they were amazed to find
complete stock of merchandise,
including soap on the shelves.
No they hadn't expected it. In
fact:
“We had heard back there
that we couldn't buy it out
here,” moaned a lieutenant
nurse, “so I brought 52 bars all
the way from New York.”
Now everybody out here
knows that there is plenty of
soap around Oregon and plenty
of water to wash it off with.
