Camp Adair Sentry Days Off Week-End Jauata ••To be entirely «: leiinre for one dey ie for one dny to be u immortal ' ’ —Chinese proverb. By Edith Durgan Intriguing and practical is the entertainment suggested in a let ter received this week from Lou Hancock of the office of the quar termaster at Camp Adair. Text of the letter follows: “In your column, Days Off, why don’t you let the boys know about the facilities for that recreation of all recreations—horseback riding? "Corvalils has an academy locat ed at 26th and A -streets which has a number of fine horses. Many eve nings during the week are devoted to “dinner” rides. A group of riders leaves the stable at 7:00 or 7:30 p. m. and ■ follow trails into the foothills, tie up the horses, build a nice campfire, and roast wieners and marshmallows. Coffee is made cowboy style—and is it good! Song fests, stories of the West, and an all-around good time are enjoyed by all. Along towards midnight the fire is blacked out and the party rides leisurely back to civili. zation. "The price of a dinner ride is only $2.25 per person. All food and refreshments áre furnished. The rides cover anywhere from eight to sixteen miles, or as far as the group wants to ride, and last usual, ly five hours, so the cost averages less than fifty cents per hour. “For straight day or evening rides, the charge is $1 per hour. If desired, an escort will ride with you to show the various trails and by-paths which go for enjoyable riding. “On Sunday, August 16, a break fast ride is planned, after which there will be a “paper chase,” which is a hilarious rough-and- ready ride over hill and dale, fol lowing a bewildering trail of paper. Prizes of cash and riding tickets await the winners of these chases.” This academy is a little more than a mile from the city center, and can be easily reached by trav eling west on Jefferson street to 26th street on the college campus, then turning left for one block. It is “catty-corner” from the sta dium. Reservations may also be made by telephone. Since the time the Oregon State college R.O.T.C. was a cavalry unit, the Corvallis Riding Academy has flourished, although interest lagged somewhat after the corps was mechanized and the combined military and horse shows were dis continued at the college. With the increase in population in Corvallis and a reduction in automobile trav eling, horseback riding is becoming more popular. Floyd Hutchins, manager of the academy, now has from 20 to 30 head of horses, including a few spirited colts which are available only to experienced horsemen. Or if you have never ridefen, he has some steady and serene models just your type, and will teach you to ride either private or in a class. So if you love horses and want something different in the way of activity, you can have a lot of fun by following this suggestion. By the way, fan mail is wonder ful.
