'GEAXDPA" HUTTON AT POPC0KX.
The Rev. J. C. Hutton of Marion coun
ty, delivered himself of his little speech
at PoiH-orn school house on last Saturday
evening, the l"th inst, to a crowd oi
eight republicans, jtwo democrats, and
three s, not counting the ladies and
children. The speech occupied about two
hours and a half, the greater part of
which was taken up with abuse and false
representations of the republican party,
which he seems to think is the chief
thine in the way of his being governor or
sheep inspector. The Popcorn folks had
listened patiently to the labored etiorts of
their own crank on this eunject, and al
most concluded that man ot Ins stamp
didn't kdow much, and after hearing
Hutton, thev are all, except the s,
entirely satisfied that they don't know
any thing at all. He closed up with a
vigorous anathema against the States
man and the Silverton Appeal which he
says are in the habit of concealing the
truth, and falsifying the facts, and kick
ing things up generally.
He didn't forget to implore the people
to subscribe for the pretty little Star, but
we all think the Star is most too badly
eclipsed, just now, to give anv light on
the subject. His manner of interesting
an audience is very unique. The silence
durine the cheering was oppressive and
almost painful. In fact you could liave
almost heard a feather drop right in the
thickest part of it. His thanks to the
audience for their good attention were
the only sensible words he uttered dur
ing the evening, and if he should happen
around tfcis way again he would lind out
he had already teached the people asmuch
any one could afford to on so small a sal
ary. Hi? prevailing opinion here is that
if we to lid buy up such men as .Hutton
for what they are really worth, and sell
them again for what they think they are
worth, that it would beat the ordinary
live stock business all holler. Y. 7..
ANOTHER CARD.
Lest Mr. Burnett's card be misunder
stood, allow me to say that while those
interested in building a bridge across the
river at this place have not asked a
pledge from candidates, yet Salem has a
claim upon the county for aid in building
the bridge, which I think no hontst, un
pledged judge or commissioner will ig
nore. She has been a willing contributor
for years to the construction of bridjres,
in remote portions of the connty, paying,
I believe, about one-third of the entire
tax, and when she shall present an equit
able claim for aid, will expect justice,
nothing more ; nothing less.
The distribution of the county fund is
one of the most important of the duties
devolving upon the county court, and no
prudent candidate wilt forestall action by
airing his opinion, in a hypothetical case,
and certainly will not pledee himself in
advance to withhold all appropriations to
this or any other section of the county ;
but, should there be an attempt to "boy
cott the bridge," in urging the candidacy
of any man, the honest voters of all par
ties should promptly resent such action
at the polls.
In common with many citizens, my
zeal for the bridge, in the event of such
an issue, will outweigh my interest in the
political complexion of the county court.

HOW TO KILL CATERPILLARS.
The festive caterpillar is again playing
havoc with the fruit trees in and about
Salem. An easy way to get rid of these
pets is to put a heavy charge of powder
in a' shot gun with a light paper wad on
it, place the muzzle of the gun 3 to $
feet from the nest of caterpillars and yon
can make a clean sweep of them and not
injure the tree or fruit, harir in the
morning is the best time to find them in
their neets. T. H,
A CARD.
I wish to make a statement that I liave
not pledged the deputyship, in case of
my election, to any one, nor will I.
dwlt R. 0. Thomas.

There is a good deal dissatisfaction

THE LATE ELIJAH WILLIAMS.
Editor Statksman : Elijah Williams
was Born in Wyoming valley, Liuernu
county, Pennsylvania, August 4, 180t.
In youth he enjoyed the scant educa
tional privileges afforded by that country
in the early part of this century, to those
in moderate circumstances. When about
twenty years of age he started west, with
no capital except good habits, robust
frame and constitution, a sharp, active,
and comprehensive mind, and a will to
work. He settled in Fort Findluy, Hun
cock county, Ohio, in the year 18;t2,
where, by persevering industry and econ
omy he accumulated a fair share of this
world's goods, and by close, careful, and
thouguttul reading at odd times be stored
his mind with such knowledge of men
and affairs as made him a useful anil 'in
fluential citixen. In the course of years
he read law, and was admitted to "prac
tice as an attorney, aud then he actively
engaged in business enterprises and pro
fessional work until tho spring of 1851.
He then shipped a stock of hardware
from New York for Portland, around Cape
Horn, and crossed tho plains with his
family wife, and four children, the latter
now lion. Richard Williams of Portland,
Maj. George Williams of Salem, Mrs.
Milton A. Stratton of Oregon City, and
Emmet Williums, Esq., of Portland. In
the fall of that year he arrived in the
Willamette valley, and settled in Salem.
He resided there and near there until the
death of Mrs. Williams and the marriage
and settlement of his children. Since
then his principal residence was in East
Portland until death called him hence
on the 16th day of May, 18H;.
In Oregon, -Mr. Williams engaged in
trade and in farming and stockraising,
until he had acquired a larc. capital, lie
thon gave his time and attention to its
management, with skill and success. In
busiuess matters he was just, Hhrral,
and indulgent, and conducted them so
easily and quietly that, to the casual ob
server, he appeared ut leisure, lie was
charitable, regardful of the riithts, feel
ings, anil opinions of others, unostenta
tious and retiring, and known intimately
to but iew persons. To them be was
much attached, and he will he held in
grateful remembrance by them, lie had
read extensively, and was intelligent in a
large und comprehensive sense, unit with
friends he was u most agreeable compan
ion. Elijah Williams was a brave, honest,
largfhearted man; his duties were well
mid faithfully ts-rfonned ; the measure of
bis "e:rs was full ; he was cjuiutlr sum
moii ? itid peacefully took his place in
the gtt,v: procession moving from mortal
ity to in. i. ortulity. Let us not complain ;
the ripi'ii.i! fruit drops from the over
ruled bough ; the golden harvest bends
