Statisuam : Tbe Cumber, land Presbyterians held a camp meet ing of some considerable interest, on the Abiqua, near Silverton, including Sabbath, June 18th. I have been attending sucb meet ings for twenty years and bave never witnessed better order and decorum, by any assembly of people, to any part of tbe world. Curtis i has accepted an appointment in the Civil Service Commission. Final action in tbe case of the applica tion of Bowen for pardon will be deferred until the return of Attorney-General Aek erman from Georgia. South Carolina pol iticians are working both for and against tbe release of Bowen. Especially ia this true in regard to Republicans in the Dis trict in that State formerly represented by Bowen. The extra session of the Illiuois Legislature, at Springfield, ad journed i'ie die yesterday. The regular session meets in this city in November, but it is doubtful if it w iil do auy business as it is believed the Constitution makes illegal any sitting of the Assemblies at any other point than tbe State Capital. CALIFORNIA NEWS. San Francisco, June 23. Governor Haight, Milton S. Latham and James Mc Donald stait this evening for Amador coun ty to consnlt with miners and mine owners and ascertain whether it ia not possible to effect an understanding which will obviate the necessity of proclaiming martial law and protecting life and property ot the point of tbe bayonet. The first new wheat arrived ia market from Vaca station this morning, but was of inferior quality. The first lot last year was received June 9th. Gen. Rosecrans will act as Grand Mar shal on the occasion of tbe celebration of the 23th anniversary of the PontihVate ot Pius IX. ' Edward Manchester, an employe in the postofiice, dropped dead to d:iy. Soappe, of San Francisco, has invented a railroad switch, which is wholly managed from the engine, and pronounced a complete success. A very valuable in vention. John II. Carmany, publisher of the Orvr land, will be a candidate for State Printer before tbe Republican State Convention. - Los Angeles, June 23. A special from Anaheim this morning says, at half-past 12 last night the Planter's hotel was bunrnd to the ground. It was with great difficulty the fire waa kept from spread tag. Loss, $7,000; insured for $4,500. Fire supposed to be tbe work of an incendiary. ' j Sutter Creek, June 24. Gov. Raight, Latham and McDonald arrived a few min utes since. Everything quiet in town, 'The Governorexpresse confidence that all can be arranged without trouble. The difficulty is simply concerning new men working at the surface. Company claims the right to employ aay one, aad tbe league demands the employment of all hands. The Presi dent of tbe leagne privately allows that in his opinion the companies wiH recede, and then gradually discharge the leaguers till all are shipped. The real motive ia the fear of Chinese Isbor. Pennsylvania mine is eighteen miles away, aad ba jnst erected a twenty stamp mill, aad it will employ Chinese exclusively, otherwise tbey say they cannot oake it pay, as the rock runs less tbajf $4 to the ten. No excitement here. Miners are quiet and . reasonable, and only ask what they think right. La. tham and McDonald are now arranging preliminaries. '; WEST INDIES. St. Thomas, June 17. Same paper states that on Tuesday last two men passed through town in pursuit of Sbultx. Tbey stated that they bad found bis shackles, and bad proof that he was on his way south. Toe Roseburg Emitjit says wheat is sell ing for $1 25 per bushel. Harvesting has also eommenoed in Cmp qua valley. A man by the name of Walker borrowed a horse last wee of a Mr. Chcnewith to visit the circus in Roseburg. When he got tbere he traded horses with the eircus com pany and left for the aouth. Both the horse and man was caught and brought back. Willamette Valley. Tbe Eugene City Guard says large droves of cattle and sheep are going east over the Military Road. Tbere is a better prospect for wheat on the Long Tom than for any time before in ten years. The P. T. Company's steamer Albany ha made twenty-one trips to Eugene City this season. She is soon to bs taken off. Portland. From the Portland dailies of Sunday and yesterday we cull,: The DulUtin says that Ward, who killed Graham, in Justice Dryer's office on Tues day morning, still contjnues cool, calm and collected. A man named Mcintosh while at work on the new lock at Oregon City last Saturday, bad hi left shoulder discolated through the carelessness of k man assisting him in handling a machine. The Orerjonian says that another at tempted murder was committed in Port land on Sunday evening. A person named Kelly was shot by Zed Willson through the head. The affray took place in a gambling room and grew out of an old grudge. Kel ly will probably not survive. Vancouver Intelligence. From the RetjUlcr of Juno 24th, we glean as folllow : The river reached its highest point at this place 011 Tuesday at noon. It came within two feet three inches and half of tbe '02 mark. It has done incalculable injury to tbe crop prospect of this county for the year. By an order of commitment from J. S. Hathaway, County Judge, Levi brooks wa sent to the Territorial Insane Asylum on Friday. Mr. G. W. Durgin ha turned over the office of Sheriff to Ckptain William Turn bull, who entered on the discharge of his duties on Wednesday, the 21st instant.
