Ben. Bolladay Heard From.
Ia answer to an article in the Ortgoni
an which suggests that. Ben. Bolladay
may not build hie railroad further south
than the head of the Willamette valley.
Mr. Bolladay replies that the 0. and C.
K. E. Co. will build their road the pres.
ent year one hundred miles south from
Portland, and continue the same, anether
year, to the head ot the valley, and there
to be governed by circumstances as to its
construction through Umpqua and Rogue
river. If the Humboldt bill passes in the
shape proposed, to connect with the O.
and C, Road in Rogue River valley, Mr.
H. expresses the determination to push
oa the work with rapidity to the State
line. We give his remaining views in his
own words. Mr. Holladay says further:
'Bat If the grant tor that branch should
be so made as to avoid the southern
counties and bring the roadinto the Will
amette valley, "at or near Eugene City"
. by the middle Fork of the Willamette
river, then we should build our road no
further south than the bead of this valley,
where we would ultimately connect with
the Humbolt road Iu case aff.tin
should take this shape it would not be
practicable. to build a road further south
than the point indicated. For we should
be out oft from southern and eastern
connections, inasmuch as the Central
Pacific Company would almost certainly
cause their California and Oregon road to
diverge from the route originally laid
down, and build it by the easier route
. by way of the valley of Pitt river, so as
to make a connection with the Hurjboldt
Eugene branch. They woald thus hare
.continuous line of railroad, running
into Oregon under ' their own control.
Whether wa build our road south ot the
head of the Willamette .. valley or not,
depends therefore on the action to' be
taken by Congress relative to the route
of the branch road from tbe Humboldt
: It is the desire, as it has been the inten
tion, ot the Oregon and California Rail
road Company to build their toad to tbe
southern boundary of the State ; and
tbey will do so without delay, unless tbeir
purposes are checked by such legislation
, in Congress as will reodrr it impractica
ble to carry them out; In other words,
if tbe grant for tbe Humboldt brunch
shall be so made as to connect with our
road in Rogue river valley, and thus se
cure alsa connection for u l with the
California and Oregon road at tbe State
line, we shall cootinue our road south
of the Willamette valley. Otherwise we
shall not do so.
In this connection it may be as well fel
ine to stale that I shall go forwBrd aod

first section within the time allotted oy

young Indian earned Charley, apparently
about twenty years old, was killed in .the
river bottom about ' quarter of a mile
from Eugene City, by a ha'f breed French
Indian from rrench Prairie. Both Char
ley and the half breed were drank it ap
pears aod tbe former was riding a pony
Tbe half-breed, who is called by the In
dians Mattel or Marsh el, wat walking be
hiod, and on 'getting into a dicpo te, be
stabbed Charley in tbe back with a knife
and then ste'abed him in the bresst. He
fell off the horse dead, and wat dragged
a few feet by the half-breed and thrown
into deep pool of water. This is the
statement ot the killing as related by two
Iadiana who ssy they.saw it. Constable
Dunteu ajrrested tbe half-breed and placed
him in j.til to await trial for murder.
The body was taken to Corvallis in a
wagon by some Sileia Indians, intending
to take tbe dead body to tbe Siltez
State Journal.

Sitka. The Alaska Timet ot May 28th,
brings considerable news from onr north
em possessions. It complains bitterly of

city, caused by men becoming intoxicated,
and in another article it sets forth at
length that alcoholic beverages are sup
pressed by law, on the plea that it is dan
gerous for tbe same to get into the bands
of Indians. Tbe old soakers of Sitka are
well supplied with lager, but they crave
good old bourbon whisker which cannot
be procured. ...... ..Tbe Timte gives an elab
orate account of fancy dress ball given
there on the 2d of May, from which it

The first through freight car arrived in
San Francisco a few days since. Before
that, goods were resbtpped from one car
to another on the way, but this car was
loaded in New York, and came' directly
through in 14 days. The Erie Railroad
Company will build 1000 cars for the
overland trade. The roads being con
structed of various guages, this car was
built on a new plan, tbe axles being ar
ranged to shift to Suit the width's of dif
ferent tracks. The safety with which
this car made tbe long trip is supposed to
insure the value of tbe patent.
