The public are invited to attend. Anderson t Brown have a fine assortment of stoves of all kind?, tome of the latest and inojt elegant parlor stoves being included. Their stock is large, and one of those parlor or kitchen stoves way be about the best Christmas present you can make j out self. Kbal Estate Sale. John W. Gilbert, Jbsq., bas purchased of lilt. J . il. Haas, the quarter block on Liberty street, corner of Division street, opposite tho Mansion House, on which the old yellow house is situated, so well known to all old citizens. Price $1,800. Hitchcock's new Monthly Magazine is, in deed, a new journal, very elegantly printed and illustrated, music sheet size, devoted to the delightful art of roi?ic, and containing portraits and sketches of great musical artists. The latest musical intelligence and several pieces of new music are published in each number. "The Little Corporal Festival" is the title of a magazine, to be published by the propri etors of the Little Corporal, every three months, and to contain new and appropriate speeohes, dialogues and plays to be acted by children at school exhibitions. It supplies one of the wants of the age. II. Laval, of this place, inventor and build er of the gang plow which took the first pre mium at the hist State Fair, bas received offi cial notice tUat, on the 20th of November, an award was made in his fuvor, and letteis pat ent will immediately issue. Mr. Duv&l has employed this winter in perfecting bis ma chine, and now proposes to sell county and State rights. Drawn Fight. Scott, of the Oregonian, and Semple, ot the Herald, collided, Monday. Setnple struck Soott with a stick, Scott drew a derringer', and the Marshal drew the pair of them to the Recorder's, when the latter drew a ten-dollar bill from the Herald man, and dismissed thetn with the injunction to go in peace and sin no more. Our readers will find in another column, among the new ads., that of M. O'Keefe, Son A Co., of Rochester, well known seedsmen and florists, offering to send their catalogues. As this firm is one of the greatest in that line, they may find it to their advantage to procure a catalogue, to be published next month, and learn what tates are charged for such plants and seeds us they may desire to purchase for next year. ' . We rather regret that the discussions of the Oregonian and Herald have resulted in the in harmonious displsy of a hickory stick and derringer. Stick to yonr pens, gents ; pierce, punch, puncture and sketch, and do that as cleverly as possible, but keep oat of the hands of the City Marshal. We view with interest ami plensuro every movement calculated to add to its success and increase the facilities there afforded fir education. A commercial duration, that prepares one for tho ordinary business of life, ia almost as necessary to the r . - -.1 . f - .: t , iurujcr buu i uiunmwiiii i wnn, or inecnanic, as it is to the merchant. The friends of the University will be glad to hear of its prosperi ty. It now has over 200 scholars in the Academic Department, besides those in tbe Mcdi.-iil School. Thi i a larzer number that ha lo is at'eodanc befur for several years. The Oregonian ssjs that on yesterday morn ing Portland bail their first white frost of the season. It was said to be freeiing berc the erening before, but we are informed that the morning foiled to show any evidence of the fact. Mr. Joseph Johnson advertises cider, aud by calling on him you will be surprised to fin bow very palatable apple-juice can be made when properly prepared. Rome of his bottled cider rivals champagne, and is mnch bett.r than most of the e'oampagne offered for sale. Those who like good cider should call on him. Mr. G. W. Teller, lately from the East, has purchased for $2,500, coiD, the farm of R. W. Hamilton, three miles from Salem, in Polk county, on the roaddown the river. This is certainly a reasonable price, as there is over 250 acres of land, and also improvements thereon of considerable value. An Improvement. We observe with pleas ure that men are engaged in putting down a fine wide sidewalk along side of Reed's Opera House, and on down to Commercial street. Next time there is a perfomance there, we can go from the Statesman office without crossing and recrossing the street, as has heretofore been the case. If Portland folks should put down such wide walks as we do here, where L would their drays and sich travel ? There are several advertisements of first class Life Insurance Companies in our col umns, worthy of attention, and the value of life insurance has become too well understood to require any argument. The correspondence relative to the New England Mutual is a new ad., and as it presents important facts relative to the peculiar obligations of that Company, under the laws of its organization in Massa chusetts, it will be useful to all persons inter ested in this subject. Drowniso or a Team. A friend over in Polk writes us that on Saturday last, as Mr. George Alexander was attempting to cross the Rickreal at a point a little below Dixie, the current proved too strong for his team and carried them down. Mr. Alexander had a narrow escape and the horses wero both drowned. The citizens of Dallas and Dixie have made up the price of the team, as he is a man with a family dependent on his exertions, aud the loss of bis horses was a severe one on him. Great as are the facilities of the P. T. Com pany for shipping freight at this season of the year, they are kept crowded, and yesterday we discovered opposition on the river. This was fiat-boat loaded with wheat for the Salem mills. These crafts come down the river fine ly, but the Company can beat them going up. The arrival of yesterday discharged freight and started bp with a horse on board ; they pull to a sand-bar, land the horse, let him tow it as far as possible, thee take him on board again until another opportunity occurs fur a tow, and so, in the course of ages, get back home "In this very fast age." We find in yesterday's Herald that Joe Teal, who has returned from a trip to the Eastern siope, has purchased 5,000 bead of Texas cattle in Steptoe Valley, which are to arrive in Oregon next spring. Cattle are good things to have in the family, but if they happen to have the mysterious Texas plague among them, it is no joke. This band may not be thus affected, but if tbey are, we may expect to hear of great losses of Oregon cat tle along the track that these travel. Oregon has been so favored, in respect to all sorts of epidemics, that it is to be hoped this one may not reach us. Friday, December IT. Our handsome reporter attended the exer cises of the Young Ladies' Literary Society at the University last evening, and we jude that the exercises and performances were very attractive, as be hasu't returned as we go to preaa. Stratton, Mr. E. T. ; Wilson, f Eugene City, and Mrs. Auna Bcardsley of this county. i ' Messrs. Yeaton & Boon have gone into the Cbrirtmass campaign with unbounded energy. Their column will be seen at the front this morning, and its guns are loaded to the muz zle with goods fresh from the rich emporiums at the East, where art, literature and fancy have entire control. They have splendid stocks of gi'ods, and offer the greatest induce ments possible to all who want to subscribe tor magazines and periodicals, for they not only furnish them at the same rates charged, in currency, by the publishers, but pay the post age besides. Call at their place, on Commer cial street, and see for yourselves. Positively the Last, and the Pcssy Night. We are authorized by Prof. Plummer to say that he will give bis last efforts to amuse the citizens of Sal cm in a "farewell en tertainment. Having done much to instruct and elevate them on tho former occasions, he will employ the time, on this sad parting oc casion, in endeavoring to amuse, and all those who want to forget that life has any troubles, will do well to be on hand at the Legislative Hall, punctually at half past sev en. Bill of fare, among other things, will consist of "Fare ye well, Bro.! Watkins," "Copt. Rice gives a husk'n'," "Shamus O'Brien," "Unfor-or-or-tunate man," a Yan kee story and the "Harp of a thousand strings." - The above excruciating entertainment the printers take the responsibility of saying will come off on Friday night, and all hope to be tnere.
