Buel, during his long connection with the bank, had tbe full con fidence of the directors and the customers of the bank, which confidence has been systematically betrayed. His defalcation - is stated . in tbe memorandum, as prepared by bim just previous to his death, and left for the investigation of the directors. The abstractions amonot to $47,000. ' RADICAL TRKTMPH MISSISSIPPI c Memphis, Dec. 2.The Avalanche's Jack- son special to-night says Alcorn's majority in the counties heard from is over 32.000. ; The gain for tbe Radicals in the same counties is nearly 30,000. No disturbances occurred, and everything was extremely quiet The result- astonishes the natives. Jackson, Dec 3. Additional returns from six counties give Alcorn several thou sand additional majority. Deut carried but three counties, and these by very small ma jorities. The whole Radical ticket, with few exceptions, is doubtless elected. TROUBLE WITH BRIGHAM YOUNG. Chicago, Dec. 3. There has been a con troversy between Brigham Young and tbe Iuleraal Revenue officers of Utah. Until this year, he succeeded in beating them at every point The present officers, however, nave brougbt tingnam to terms in tbe quar rel between them about the proper tax on what is called church property. It appears that Brigham is charged about $50,000 tax and penalties, and he proposes to tight the cose before tbe Revenue Bureau until it will probably reach Congress. ALABAMA LEGISLATURE. Montgomery, Dec. 2. The Senato to-day discussed a bill to give tbe negroes equal privileges in public conveyances. The Democrats favor an amendment providing that common carriers be forced to provide equally comfortable but separate quarters lor tne two races. New York, Dec. .3. Them has been a considerable advance in the passenger rates ana rreigbt to tne West, bulletined to-day, The new freight rates to San Francisco for first class are eight dollars per hundred. The brig Deerfliss at the quarantine anch orage, loaded with petroleum, took fire this morning and will be a total loss. Tbe names forced the crew overboard for safety Fifty ruffians to-night made a raid on a registry office in the upper part of tbe city, destroyed the registry, list and robbed one ot tne inspectors of his valuables. GREAT WHISKEY RIOTS. One of tbe greatest whiskey riots since :the parage of Internal Revenue laws took place to day. Trouble had been aoore headed and 500 troops were detailed by Gen. McDowell to assist tbe Revenue offi cers. There were twenty distilleries near the Navy Yard in the section known as Irish town. These were attacked by troops, three distilleries taken or destroyed. 35 bar rels of whiskey captured and thousands rt gallons allowed to run to waste. The troops were attacked by a mob of 2,000 people, but succeeded in projecting the wonting pariy; several persons weie in jured by brickbats, and one of the Dartv bad his bead split with an ax. The sol diers, did not fire on tbe rioters and the lat ter followed them duriog the whole day, aou conuuuea on toe streets till nignt mak ing tnreats oi vengence. The steamer D. C. Haskin. for San Fran cisco, foundered in the Gulf stream on tbe 15th ult Tbe Captain and eight others were picked up by the schooner Grassmerev. Three are known to be"drowned and quiie a number missing. The post mortem on the body of A. D. Richardson, shows that he was shot through tbe stomach, liver and intestines, it is sin prising that he lived so long. Beecher and Frothingham conducted tbe funeral ser vices. Chicago. Dec. 3. A Washington special says Commissioner Wells expresses the opinion that the revenue can be reduced $120,000,000. and to this end tbe Committee of Ways and Means proposes to cut down the tariff $25,000,000 and tbe internal rev enue $50,000,000. On a vote to take off the duty on coal, salt and copper, the Com mittee are a tie. : . O. C. R. R. Washington, Dec. 3. Tbe President has appointed James H. Flsk Commissioner to examine and report upon tbe Oregon Rail road vice Jesse App!egae resigned. Rome, Dec. 2. Four hundred bishops have already urrived to attend the Council. The following queer incident is said to have occurred at the recent election in Chicago : A certain candidate declared to all tbe world that during the day, he would drink more beer and roll a big ger rote than any ot hia competors or associates. At 2 o'clock, p.m. he had put himself outside of his sixty-first glass of tbe foaming fluid, and arrived at a 'mixed' condition of body and mind. Boldly grappling his sixty second beaker before he had imbibed a moiety of it his power of suction failed him, and he fell to the earth. Upon this the poor candidate was carried to the polls by his malicious antagonists and deposited under the table, the result of which was that those who came tip to vote for him incontinently resolved to go for the other man. Ilia supporters (in a doub le senBe) rallied and took him away, but the sad conclusion alter all was tha he staggered considerably (he couldn't run) behind his own ticket. We have heard 'nothing for over half a year about the Alabama claims.' Mr. Motley has taken no new steps in regard to them, so far as is known; and the press, both in England and . America, has ceased to discuss them. ' While we are glad to be releived from ( the jangle and noise, j and the anger and recrimination, we hare reason to believe that the Administration has not by any means lost sight of the question, or of the necessity for its settlement It will take some time to mature the plans and bring them to a consummation ; but there is at least a probability that, before the close of President Grant's term, the Ala- i bama claims will be settled in a way satisfactory to the American people. Ex. Governor Curtin, who is trav eling abroad, has excited considerable attention' by his philological attain ments, lie has been making speeches in Bohemian and Russian languages ; but he talked to the Bohemians in Rus sian, and to the Russians in Bohemi an. We hope the Governor's trinity of language is not like the three styles of handwriting -which Rufus Choate employed one of which he could read himself, another which his clerk could read, . but he couldn't, and a . third ; which his Satanic Majesty couldn't read. ' The following Is a verbatim report of a conversation between two young ladies who have just finished their education at a classical school : Were you at the picnic ! My bare-skin is my bear-skin, and nothing else.' 'I'll give in,' said Richard, looking foolish and flabersasted. 'Let's ad journ to the Pewter Mug and say no more about it. John Randolph was one of the most sarcastic men that ever lived. One time a young man attempted to make his acquaintance. lie obtained an introduction, and among the first remarks said : 'I passed by j our house lately, Mr. Randolph.' 'I hope you always will !' was the reply. An other one twitted hiiu as to his educa tion. 'The gentleman reminds me,' said Randolph, iu reply, 'of the lands about the headwaters of the Montgomery, which are poor by na ture, and cultivation has ruined them. It will not be loug before we are called to admit some more Terri tories as States into the Union. Among others, Dakota will present fair claims for consideration. Villa ges and settlements are being rapidly established there. This past summer some five thousand immigrants made their homes in that Territory. The present population is reckoned at twen ty thousand,' and forty-seven thous and acres of land have been lately taken up under the Homestead and Preemption laws by actual Bettlers. A man out West who read that cop peras put in a bed of ants would causbthem to leave, put some of them in his mother-in-law's bed to see if she wouldn't go. He says she was there at last accounts. 'Ma,' said a little urchin, peeping from beneath the bed clothes, 'I am cold ; I want some more cover on the bed.' 'Lie still, my dear,' said the mother, 'until your sister comes home from church ; she has got the com forter for a bustle.' Child Killed by a Ferret. In Edgerton, England, lately, a stray fer ret got into a room where a child was lying, and attacked it. When the pa rents returned home, they found the infant dead ; its eyes were removed, and a part of the nose had been gnaw ed away. To Save The Ladies. From Burning Up. By adding to the starch used in preparing their dress es, a tablespoonful of common alum in a powdered state ; the alum makes the dress far stiffer, and prevent it bursting into flames when placed in contact with any burning substance. Red Ants. To get rid of these pests, wash your shelves clean, and while damp rub fine salt on them quite thickly ; let it remain on for a time and they will entirely disapear. A man and his wife in Washington, who kept each a refreshment and fruit stand in the neighborhood of two or three of the departments, cleared $50, 000 during the war.
