Mining Speculation, Homestead Lots, and every other kind of business, runs in veins. It has been so for twenty years; first among the Speculations. Everybody, farmer or not, planted Barley,' then Onions, then Potatoes,' and all 'busted,' then Honey-bees, and that busted, then one thing after an other. Every body rushed into this Electric Maelstrom, and nearly all went down. ; "When this Current touched the mind and body, Suicides, Murders, Divorces. Tl-cse follows in Currents also. It has been so in the outer world of change. Blowing up ofSteamers, Burning of Steamers, Ilail road Calamities, all go in masses; one event follow'3 swiftly after the oth er. Who can explain this, save by Electrical Phenomena 1 Again, the sudden Deatlis. that, fall upon our Community so often, and most startling in their power and sad ness ! If these are to be attributed to any Electric power not yet understood. may we not then suppose that the Earth and its present quaking all ar ound us is affected the same way, on ly in a greater degree. This beiug feo, shall we here not ieel this power It our theory is correct, we should look for a little evidence of a shake about Sunday next, or near that time. Here is a matter for all Students in Natural Philosophj-; and this is a subject we think our New University should undertake to solve, as it em braces all the Science. California farmer. ,A young blood, residing not a half dozen miles from this place, was the victim of rather a good joke on Sur day night recently. lie was trying to be particnlary 'sweet' on a young lady, and had paid a number of visits at the residence of her parents. The oldfolks had somewhat gotan idea into their heads that the children were most too young to 'keep company,' and conveyed the desired hint by call the girl out of the room and sending her to bed at nine o'cloek. The lady of the house astonished the young gent by bringing into the parlor a huge piece ot bread and butter, nicely spread with sugar, which she present ed to him, sayiug in her kindest man ner, 'There, Bubby, take this and ran home to your mother ; it's time little boys were in bed.' The would be young beau hasn't felt as though he wanted any more sweetness from that source since. Gentlemen. of tbe Jury,' said a "Western lawyer, 'I don't mean to insinuate that this man is a covteous person, but I will bet five to one that if you should bait a steel trap with a new three cent piece, and place it with iu six Inches of his mouth, you would catch his soul. I wouldn't for a mo ment insinuate that he will steal, but may it please the Court and gentlemen of the Jury, I wouldn't trust him in a room with red hot mill stones, and the Augel Gabriel to watch 'cm.' A negro was arraigned in the Fleming(Ky.) Circuit Court, recently, for carrying a concealed deadly weap on. The charge was apparently proved, and the Judge had ordered a line against him of 850, when the darkey, much to the astonishment of the Court and the amusement of the crowd, drew the deadly instrument in his defence, which proved to be the enameled handle of an old umbrella. The fine was remitted and the colored humorist discharged. It doesn't follow that, because we have taken a perilous step, we ousrht to retrace it. She wasn't a wise old woman who crossed a bridge, and on seeing it labelled dangerous, turned and recrossed it in all haste. Josh Billings says : When a young man ain't good for any thing else, I like; to see him carry a gold-Leaded cane If he can't buy a cane, let him part his hair in the middlo. Any man who drinks whisky need not flatter himself that his breath smells like new mown hay , for . it doesn't. ; ! The Use of Walking, Walk ing for the young and active people, is by far the best exercise; riding is good for the elderly, middle-aged and invalids. The abuse of these ex ercises consists in taking them when the system is exhausted more or less by previous, fasting or by mental la bors. Some peraons injudiciously at tempt a long walk before breakfast, under tlie belief that it is conductive to health. Others will get up early to work three hours at some abstruse mental toil. :, The effect in both instan ces is the , same : it subtracts from the power of the day. A Bhort saun ter or some light reading before the meal. is the best indulgence of the kind ; otherwise the waste occasion ed by labor must be supplied "by nourishment, and the breakfast will necessarily become a heavy meal, and the whole morning's comfort sacrificed by a weight at the chest, from imper fect digestion of food. These obser vations apply especially to elderly persons, who are prone to flatterthem selves into tho ' persuasion that they can use their mental or bodily pow ers in age as in youth. - - B UY: YOUR SOIAV 8JJL.V .cat and Plated Ware at n&na MISCELLANEOUS.
