h'j w iri rzBOsananniw wjgpw Statesman AND UNIONIST. SALEM. FRIDAY, OCT. 8 THE CITY AND COUNTRY. " Wednesday Oct. 6. P,COIE8 FOR SALB AT Wig WELL'S . We coll attention to'this fact. The advertisement is new to day, and you can read it and learn U the particulars by calling at the Pioneer Stable. Crockery ahd Glassware. Messrs Scott fc Farrar, at the Post Offico store, have just received a large lot of crockery and glassware, to which they call attention tc-day. They Also have constantly on hand groceries and provisions in full supply. There are one hundred and fifty pupils in attendance at the Willamette University. This is a larger number than was entered up on tho rolls at this time It, rt year. The school is in a very prosperous condition, and there is every promise that tli'.- students will be far advanced by the end of (he school year. Theatrical. The Carter Company last niht gave an excellent performance of the play of "Caoiille, or the Fate of a Coquette." Mrs. Carter, as Camille, did well, as she al ways does. She certainly wins her way every time she appears, and is becoming a favorite with the people of Ptilcm. It will be sen by notice elewhere, that the firm of Logue & Wilson has dissolved and be come the firm of Lngue A Adams, the new member being Mr. Clias. Adams, 'well known to us all. Their advertisement claims atten tion in this issue, for they are prepared to do business on good terms at the old stand. Comisq. Mr. Smith, who arrived yester day overland in his own coach from California, informs us that there are a great many more on the way. lie was seventeen days making the trip, in a six-horse wagon; 'found tho roads good until tie rain ; since then sloppy. Did not see any green grass until they got into Oregon. They say that for 150 miles back, every one they passed was coming to the Fair. Has Come. Messrs. Wade, Bolter & Co., .in. North Salem, opposite the Factory, have just received a new and elegant stock of goods. They have some of the latest fashions that are out, among which we may mention the llaward Hat, introduced for the first time in this State, by Messrs. Wade, Bolter & Co. This firm also- has a lafge stock of very fine dress goods, and those desiring to purchase should call upon them. The World's Circus. This show will be here ready to perforin next Saturday evening. The lions are to bo fed in the afternoon. The people have found out by this time that this circus is not a humbug. It gave great satis faction when here before. The entry of Mons. Lambert into the lions' den was one of the most daring feats imaginable. Feeding the lions is something worth seeing, and it can be seen for a moderate charge. Gen. Tom' Thumb and Commodore 2utt and their little wives, as will be seen by the advertisement in another column, are to be here Fair week. We have several times been asked if these are really the world renowned little folks, and have no hesitation in saying that they really are so. Their entertainments are very attractive, for, in addition to seeing the little people, those who attend will see them perform parts, and they will sing songs, represent characters and do many very attract ive things. Little Commodore Nutt is a per fect comedian, and Tom Thumb used to per form well twenty years ago, wbn we first saw him. Fii.liso Up. Salem is filling up ; Oregon is filling up; during the last week we have re ceived accessions from Idaho, Montana, Cali fornia and " the Plains across," nouses to let are in demand, in fact there does not seem to be a sufficient number to Batisfy the re quirements of the immigration. One gentle man informs vs that ho has had a dozen ap plications in a week to rent a vacant house which is engaged ; another had three yester day after one small house, he does'nt say whether they all g t it or not. The old sheila in North Salem are full. Say tho place is being built too fast, indeed! Wo can't see it in that light. Frof. Maximilian has come to Salem, and will exhibit his surprising feats of magic and slight of hand at Uriswold's Theater on next Friday evening. He has visited the princi pal cities of the United States, and is recom mended everywhere as a man of extraordinary art. He professes to understand the Spirit ual feats of being tied and untied, and devotes . part of every performance to exposing them, and this he does openly, so that the spectator can repeat the process in his own person. The Professor is very jealous of his reputa tion in view of the fact that so many impos- i ters pretend to practice slight of hand. It was probably in view of this fact that he showed in our office some of his nicest touches, for sending for a coffee cup, he stood entirely . free from j the table on which it was placed, and we lilted it several times by his order and each time' found nn Oregon red apple under the cup, How the apple came there puzzled ns as much as is did the King to find them in .the dumpling. While " tho devil" stood, open mouthed, catching this performance, the Professor turned around and picked a half dollar off his sloeve, which astonished " the devil" considerably. Tho Professor certainly .comes well reeommendod, and is undoubtedly ,a man of rare art. Couscil Proceedings. A full board was present last evening at the regular meeting. The City Treasurer presented his quarterly re port, which was referred to the Committee on Finance. The following bills were presented .and allowed : Statesman ........$ 5"00 F. A. Cook- 2 00 England ... 1 00 J. L. Starkey 40 00 T. II. Reynolds 14 00 Uzafovnge A Wright....... 19 00 Cox 4 Earbart 7 00 T. Cunningham 23 38 John Taylor 3 75 O. The Street Commissioner was instruct ed to lay down the sidewalk in the 1st Ward .as indicated by the City Ordinance passed. last spring. . The Marshall was authorized to em ploy three night policemen daring the Fair week v On motion the Council adjourned. The Innocents Abroad. Mrs. Libby, of ?an Francisco, informs us that she will imme diately proceed to canvass the city of Salem fur subscribers ' to Mark Twain's inimitable book with the above title. We don't propose o tell our readers who Mark Twain- is, be- c.iute ait tbe readers of newspapers know him as the greatest humorist in America. Fun comes as natural to Mark as air or watei. The book in question is his full experience during a summer of foreign travel, and he tells us, in most humorous style, what he and hi, companions saw and what they did, and what was done to them. He and his company are the "innocents" who were "abroad," ami if our readers want a book that will drive tho blues away, filled with caricatures and illus trations to suit the humor of the author, we commend to their attention "The Innocents Abroad." We introduce Mrs. Libby to our readers with confidence that she can explain the matter much better than we can ; at least she can if she succeeds as well as she did with us. Thursday, Oct. 7. The masons have finished the brick work on II. Owen's building, in South Salem. : Mr. Lobdeil's Gallery is advertised in an other column. He is ready to take sun pic tures of all sizes and styles, on short notice, at his rooms on State street. Farmers and stock growers say that they never have seen grass so good in the fall as it is at this time. They think that cattle will stand the rainy season better than usual, even if wo should have a hard winter. Destal. Drs. Smith fc Meredith are out this morning with a statement of what they can do for the public. Dr. Smith is well known as a dentist and most favorably so. j Look at their advertisement. Postposed. The Sh'icui Musical Union will not give a concert during Fair week as was contemplated. The Union found it dif ficult to get a hall suitable for the concert, and consequently postponed the concert for a month. Mr. Yeaton advertises more books just re ceived. He has also on hand several of Webb's Adders, machines for effecting perfect compu tation. This remarkable invention is worth seeing, and many persons would find one of them useful in their daily business. In the County Court Wednesday, a spirited contest was going on as to tho location of a County road from Waconda to St, Louis. Much bitterness was manifested by the parties in opposition. Messrs. Moores, Witten fc Miller have started their new engine which works well. This Company now use three engines, equal ing 120 horse power to propel tneir various pieces of machinery. Agricultural Implements. Wc are in formed that the sales of farming implements this fall have been much larger than ever be fore. Three plows havo "been sold this fall where one was disposed of last year. Farm ers are also buying a greater number of grain drills than at any previous time. Medical Joursal. We are assurrcd that the prospects of the " Oregon Medical and Surgical Journal," are very fair indeed. Sub scriptions are coming in quite rapidly, and the medical profession throughout the State show a disposition to extend a substantial support to this home organ. It is said by those acquainted with the facts that as the time for holding the State Fair ap proaches, it brings into our city many persons who have no very nice distinctions between what is " thine and mine." Therefore it is necessary that our citizens use great precau tions Rbout securing their property from rogues. Accidents.. We learn thut a son of Carter Kcene, when driving a team the other day, had a runaway in which tho wagon was over turned the bed striking his leg, breaking it. Also, a, man named Jervais got his foot caught in the cogs of a threshing machine, by which the toes and part of tho foot were badly mashed. Timks is Sax Francisco. Several Salem geatleman, lately returned from San San Fran cisco, report the weather there as excessively hot. Tho hotels were coustantly refusing ac commodations to travelers being filled to over flowing. This may appear singular in view of the fact that trade has not been very nour ishing in that city of late, but the fact seems to be that there are hundreds of strangers from across the continent, and the hotels are crowd ed by these large parties of prospectors. Gov. Wood of Illinois. We had the pleas ure of meeting last evening with Gov. Wood and Mr. Stone, and their ladies, of Quincy, Illinois, who arrived by last steamer, and have fpent a few days traveling in Oregon. Gov. Wood has presided over the fortunes of the great Prairie State, and wears sturdily the frosts of age. He was oiie of the original Re publicans who organized the party in that State and has shaped its fortunes since that time. . Almost every city has its local celebrity and Salem is not wanting in that respect. Our man of distinction is Christopher Swinsberger, who is ever ready to take a drink or march at the head of a procession, whether military or civic. Chris, has been absent rusticating in tho mountains for several months, but he has returned much improved in his personal ap pearance, ready to do the honors of tho place to tho multitude of strangers expected next week. We knew when Chris, went off to tend a sheep ranch that his new mode of life would uot drive she State Fair out of his head. A Case of Destitctiox. Mrs. Cline tells us of a case of extreme destitution in North Salem, that should commend the sympathy of the community. A widow woman and her eight children, have crossed the plains this summer. Her husband was murdered by bushwhackers during the war, and she has been assisted by 4 friend to come to Oregon. Mrs. Williams, the mother, is quite sick, and by her side is a little girl with a broken leg hurt on the plains and two boys are at work but they aie unable to earn enough for all. The family are in great need, and we hope Mrs. Cline will find a favorable response to her efforts to obtain relief for them. We are go favored that the poor seldom appeal to ns for help, but we lose no time in helping those who need. The object is to afford the family temporary relief until tbe mother regains her health. Rcxawat. Yesterday evening a team of large bay horses, belonging to Mr. Bean, be came frightened near the Court House, and commenced running. They had not gone far before the hind wheels of the wagon was do tached from the forward ones. This lighten ed the load and the horses ran at their great est speed down Court street. At the corner of Court and Commercial, the off horse was erowdei upon the sidewalk, and thus the runaways went, striking Jhe awning posts by the Post Office door. The posts were torn away and the whole awning came down with a great crash, on top of the wheels. Tbe off horse was here stopped1, but his mate circled about and ran through the Long Bridge into South Salem. Luckily no one was' injured, though several persons were under the awn ing when the team struck the sidewalk. We did net learn the extent of the damages or how badly the horses were injured, though both mtt't be considerably. Friday, October 8. Tie Female Gambler in coming ! Lookout ! Tho river is rising s'owfy, though it is stiil lower than it was tbe Cr.t f last vrtck. Weather Item. There is uo telliug what weather we may have lo-iinrrii. Uzafovage & Wright arc opening an im mense stock of goods in their liucjust received from California. We acknowledge the receipt of a box of very fine pear, from Mr. K. C. eer. He will please accept our thank.--. Tho World's Circus will be on baud Satur day evening for a first rate performance. Lions will be fed Saturday afternoou. Will any preparation restore the hair to Us original color and not injure it ? Yes ! Itall's Vegetable Sicilian Hair Kenewer. Dr. Chance gives us an essay on the dental art, which will be found in the advertising column, under the head of "New To-dav." Rev. W. II. Story, of Portland, will hold service at the Episcopal Church, St. Paul's, on next Sabbath, at the usual hours of morning and evening service. Died. On Monday, October 4th, at his res idence on Howell Prairie, Johu Howell, aged 82 years. One of the old pioneers of Oregon and an esteemed citizen. Elegant pianos, and Family organs of cele brated Mason fc Hauibliu make a large num ber just received and for sale by J. K. Gill. See advertisement new to-dav. Any person who enjoys seeing olegant cm broidery, will be well paid by calling at Gilbert Bros., and examining a beautiful cloth cover, worked by a San Francisco lady, on the G ro ver & Baker sewing machine. Judge C. N. Terry's name should have ap peared in yesterday's issue as ono of the coi'i mittee to provide homes for delegates to the State Sunday School Convention, which will meet in the Congregational Church at 2 o'clock to-day. Yesterday the Board of County Commission ers for Marion county levied the tax for this fiscal year. The rate this year is 15 mills on the dollar 5 State, 2 school, and 7J county tax. Last year the rate was 14 J mills. The value of all tbe taxable property, after the in dividual indebtedness is subtracted, is $3,079, SSO. The Supreme Court adjourned yesterday af ternoon, having cleared the docket of all the cases set for trial at this term. More decisions of the lower courts have been reversed this term than at any previous one, and the ques tions adjudicated have been more difficult, and of more importance, than heretofore. The Bar, too, has been better, and all the cases have been ably tried. Tho second growth of many plants and veg etables, under the stimulus of the late rains and mild weather, is quite surprising. We have string beans in our garden grown on old vines. The weeds and the grass cover every thing. But we hear from Mr. Win. Beagle, of Polk county, that he has a plum tree loaded with blossoms, and a Bartlett pear tree which is ripening a second crop of fruit, not so large as the first, but still are veritable pears of the second crop. Female Gambler Coming. Great curiosity is aroused by the announcement made by hand bills posted around town, and items in this paper, that "the Female Gambler is coining." In answer to those questionings, we give tho simple reply, that we don't know anything about it ; that she must be a dangerous wom an, and she must be coining this way, or the proper authorities would not notify tho world at such expense of her intention. Look out for her ! and have a dollar ready when she comes. The runaway wo told of yesterday was brought about in rather au amusing manner. The driver was starting out of town with a pair of horses hitched behind. . These sudden ly reversed action and gave so heavy a pull back that they jerked the wagon bed oft be hind with tho driver in it. and the forward team had nothing to do but run away with the fore wheels. Several ladies and children were in great danger from the frightened team, but thev almost miraculously escaped. The ultiv of " Inzomur," oue of the most eloquent and poetical of dramas, was well rcn- don-il on Thursday eveniiLir. Mrs. Carter in the , . .... ., . , v, fi .f I character ot Partheniamakinf; ono ot her finett efforts. In this play the high-bred Oreek maiden teaches the barbarian chief the art of love, and entices him to obey her lightest be hests, follow her to civilization, and become a valued citizen. It is in this beautiful play that the oft-quoted lines occur, descriptive of lovo : I " Two souls with but a single thought, Two hearts that beat as one ;" words that charmed and subdued the savage life of Ingomar, which character was well sus tained by Mr. Carter. j . I Prof. Maximilian will, to-night, display his sleight-of-hand and magic at Griswohl's Hall, and he will also expose the fallacy of the rope-tfing and untying process, heating the spiritual mediums at their own game. To thoroughly explode the idea of spiritual agen cies he will allow any one to tie him the audi ence may choose, and will untie himself in less time than has been made by the fastest spirit on record. We understand that ho does this openly before tho audience, thoroughly explaining the process. In matters of magic Jhe Professor is a great proficient, as we have discovered by ocular proof in our own office. We might think there was some diablerie about it, only for the fun and good humor hn keeps up all the while. There is something useful in these exhibitions of skill, for they put the heart at ease about many things we might else consider supernatural. There are more things in heaven and earth than are dreampt of in our philosophy, as can be proved by the doings of Maximilian, a greater man in his way than the late Mexican Emperor. i The extraordinary large colt taken to Cali fornia by Mr. Cady, somo weeks since, was foaled from a mare owned by David Delany. When weaned was sold by him to his brother Daniel Delany for $100, and two years after wards was sold by him to Cady for $500. We are told that Cady was offered $1,500 for the colt as he drove him south. This horse is 3 years old, over l"i hands high, will weigh 2,000 pounds, and is from the old Leviathan stock brought here by Dan. Clark many years ago. Old Leviathan has left many good colts to attest his qualities. Mr. David Delany has another young horse of the same stock that promises to be a very superior animal. i 'Jlov have not one drop of the great Napoleon's blood in your veins,' said testy old Jerome one day in a pet to his nephew, the Emperor: Well,' replied Louis Napoleon, 'at all events I have his whole family on my shoul ders.' Riches got by fraud are dug out of ones own heart, and destroy the mind. Riches got by deceit cheat no man so much as the getter. COMMERCIAL NEWS. Salem, Friday, Oct. S, 1SG9. Market Reports. There are no changes ' in prices to chronicle, no new excitements in business. Those of our merchant who have received their fall, stocks are doing a good business. The grocery and provision trade is especially active. The price of wheat and flour remains depressed. The merchants of Sa'.ein are retailing coal oil, from the old stocks on hand, at a lower figure than they can replace it, but the market may be recruit ed below by large arrivals from the East to bring it down to regular rates before our stocks ou hand are exhausted. The near approach of tho State Fair makes matters lively in Salem, as many strangers are in the streets. We are preparing lor a holiday week, and if the weather remains good it will probably be tho liveliest week ever known here. Produce and Provision Itlarket.
