The Dad Lands, of Dakota, are com
posed of whito day, which, by the action
of rains, has ' been cut into hillocks.
They are not high, seldom more than
forty or lifty feet, hut. it is up one and
down Mitoherthe whole way. There are
no water courses, the nearest approach
being a gully forty feet deep, with a foot
and a half ot mud at the bottom. At
every few yards you must stop, and with
n spittle and shovel cut a path down the
side of a hill in order to descend, and
then tip the side of the ono opposite in
.order to get up again. The mud is as
sticky as tar, ami in going a few yards
the wheels of a wagon become solid
round cakes, and all the mules you can
hitch to it will not be able to pull it a
foot, farther. Then the sputles are
brought and tho wheels cleared, the op
perution being repeated two or three
times in a hundred vards. The extent
of the Dad Lands in takota, is probably
a hundred miles from north to south by
lifteun to thirty miles wide, Statesman.
