inventor savs that he hopes to see the

At Silverton, Sunday, the Oregonian

which runs down town ovorWater street.

being widened the citizens of Silverton
and the city fathers opposed the railway
company iu its endeavors to widen the
side-truck, and it has been oi no use
since tlie rolling stock was changed.
The company hud to get down Water
street and to the mill in some way, and
every time they started to change the
gauge the city stopped them, saying no
right of wav had been granted for stand
ard gauge track there, lint tlie com
pany was not to be celeated, so bright
and early Sunday morning they put a
force of about lifly men on, and w idened '
the three-fourths of a mile of road, lead
ing lrom the main linn clown Water
street to the mill, before the citizens of Sil
verton Itnew what they were about or had
an opportunity to interfere. It ia claimed
the right of way was never granted
tho company, by either city or county,
for the laying of its line on this . street,
antl some fun may be expected, as the
railway has had peaceful possession and
run its trains without molestation for so

New Method of Placer .Mining.
Mining men have always know n that
the sand bars of the Fraser river were
wero rich in yellow metal, but the great
trouble has boon to got at it. Tlie river
is too big to be diverted from its bed,
and although millions lie a few feet be
low the surface it has not been practi
cal to take it out in tho past.
Two ingoiiiiis mechanics and mines of
Westminister, Messrs. J. A. Matthews
and II. T. Scurry, 1'iavo invented a
machine which they claim will work in
gravel on tho bars profitably. The
machine is called a sub-aqueous miner,
ami though bard to describe without a
Haw is Bubstuutiully a large scow, on
which is a lixed a boiler and engine, the
latter being the motive power tu actuate
a set of dredge buckets, much .the same
as a marine dredger. The stuff raised
is made to pans throrgb sluices and rif
fles and over blankets and mercury
charged plates, which arrest most of the r
gold in transit.
Tho great feature of the machine is an
underwater flume, which lies along the
bottom of the stream behind, where the
buckets of the dredge are at work on the
gravel. The Hume lies dpwn stream,
and the disturbed gold-bearing gravel is
swept through it by tho force ot the cur
rent, aided by a revolving brush, which
sweeps it into the other end of the fhuue.
This Hume is provided with blankets,
rilllen, mercury plates, etc,, and is so
arranged that by a system of steam
winches the tlumo can be at any time
easily hoisted to tho surface for exami
