Ilo owned the lerry where the city is now, in 1852, when we crossed the river Bt that place, and it was known all over tho Willamette as "Spore's ferry," An exchange tells the following sad story: "A brother editor, who was 'badly gono' on his lady, undertook to give her a bull room puff, and wrote. "Her dainty feet were encased in shoes that might have been taken for fairy boot;" Hut the blundering composi tor mudo it read : "Her dirty feet were encased in shoes that might have been takon for a ferry boats." And now the editor is a girlless madman, while the blundering compositor is a fugutivo in tho land. On tho day before Christmas, Frank Doughton and Critl Hurkhurt, who live n few miles of tho city, says the Al bany Democrat, catno upon a wild bog that had been seen quilo often in that, locality. The bog was so fat that its locomotion was slow and tedious. They caught it with a dog, hauled it home, killed and dressed it, and found it wejghad 500 pounds. After trying .the fat out thoy found it weighed 270 pounds. It could not run, and would only tight when one guts in i's way. Mount Itainier It .Must I.Vmatu. Sometime last summer the (.'huinlx-r of Commerce of Tacoma requested the iiroH'r authorities in Washington city to have the name Mount liainier changed to .Mount Tacoma on government maps and charts. On September 4 President Ilurri on appointed a board on geo graphic names, w ith Thomas O Menden hall a chairman, to decide the proper designation in about 2(H) cases of dispute. among them Mount Kainier. Colonel Mentleiihall asked Judge Swan, of Port Tnwnsend, lo give him a history of the discovery and the naming of Washing tun 'a biggest mountain. JmL'o Swain d d so, and told him he knew of no rea son why the original name itainier should be changed to Tacoma, except lo gratify the iersomil pride of citizens oi Tacoma. Today he received from Col onel Mendenhiill an advance copy of Ihe report of the commission, which declares that no authority whatever was found fur the name Mount Tacoma, and it must always remain on all government maps and charts aa Mount Itainier. He says he tieliovcs it possible to gene rale electricity from coal without the aid of any motive power. He has pro gressed so fur as to generate .electricity in this way but not in sullicient quantit ies to be of much value. It iH suid that a pound of coal contains enough Intent energy to carry itself around the globe. At present over 85 per cent of this energy in wasted iu the process of conversion into heat and power. Mr. Kdison'a scheme, if it were to be proved practi cable, would undoubtedly revolutionize the industrial world. It would make electricity the only motor uower in common use and the wiving of fuel would be enormous. The enthusiastic inventor savs that he hopes to see the great Atlantic liners driven across the iieeun by the power generated from 11 few baskets of coal where now thousands of tons are consumed. .tight ot Way Ruse. At Silverton, Sunday, the Oregonian Kailwnv formerly the Narrow Oblige succeeded m widening its side-track which runs down town ovorWater street. W hen tlie, Otvgomun lines proper were being widened the citizens of Silverton and the city fathers opposed the railway company iu its endeavors to widen the side-truck, and it has been oi no use since tlie rolling stock was changed. The company hud to get down Water street and to the mill in some way, and every time they started to change the gauge the city stopped them, saying no right of wav had been granted for stand ard gauge track there, lint tlie com pany was not to be celeated, so bright and early Sunday morning they put a force of about lifly men on, and w idened ' the three-fourths of a mile of road, lead ing lrom the main linn clown Water street to the mill, before the citizens of Sil verton Itnew what they were about or had an opportunity to interfere. It ia claimed the right of way was never granted tho company, by either city or county, for the laying of its line on this . street, antl some fun may be expected, as the railway has had peaceful possession and run its trains without molestation for so many years. Statesman. New Method of Placer .Mining. Mining men have always know n that the sand bars of the Fraser river were wero rich in yellow metal, but the great trouble has boon to got at it. Tlie river is too big to be diverted from its bed, and although millions lie a few feet be low the surface it has not been practi cal to take it out in tho past. Two ingoiiiiis mechanics and mines of Westminister, Messrs. J. A. Matthews and II. T. Scurry, 1'iavo invented a machine which they claim will work in gravel on tho bars profitably. The machine is called a sub-aqueous miner, ami though bard to describe without a Haw is Bubstuutiully a large scow, on which is a lixed a boiler and engine, the latter being the motive power tu actuate a set of dredge buckets, much .the same as a marine dredger. The stuff raised is made to pans throrgb sluices and rif fles and over blankets and mercury charged plates, which arrest most of the r gold in transit. Tho great feature of the machine is an underwater flume, which lies along the bottom of the stream behind, where the buckets of the dredge are at work on the gravel. The Hume lies dpwn stream, and the disturbed gold-bearing gravel is swept through it by tho force ot the cur rent, aided by a revolving brush, which sweeps it into the other end of the fhuue. This Hume is provided with blankets, rilllen, mercury plates, etc,, and is so arranged that by a system of steam winches the tlumo can be at any time easily hoisted to tho surface for exami nation.
