We left Oregon City on NovomW 4th,

We iiept in a barn tint I it iK'it , tuni
found tho weather rather vol. When
we uw.tte In the innniinil wa found that
we hud boon ilmnilng under chicken
roost, and our first object was in trying
to Uml aomeeKKS.
W started on our way at 8 A. M., ar-
rivltiK at Laiiln Creek l ulls at 10 A. M
Did not atop, but went on our Journey,
calliii nt a rancher's (or milk. Our
route led ut over aome very rouub coun
try; at laat we reached Cedar Camp at 1
I'.M.
After outing dinner and packing our
blankets, ouo of tha party and myself
prociuuiftii to the r.aiciiu .Mining; Cam
one mile ami a half below, down a sum
hill of about M degree grade, taking the
provisions with us, arriving thereat 3
l'.M. Making the second trip tip the
mountain after the rest of our outllt,
reaching Cetlar Cainii at 4 1'. M.,loonr
aurptise who should we meet but our
honorable foreman, Steve lireen?
Alter resting for awhile wo proceeded
down the mountain, all packed down ex
cept our foreman, who packed hia horse
to its full capacity, trembling under ill
'ou.l, arriving onu hnlf hour later nt
,cainp un account of repacking four
limes descending the mountain. After
unpHikng, fcedinii and waUAiIng his
horse, he procooiled to Isd nt 0 I'. M.,
the rest of the crowd enjoying thein
seivim around the ciiiie llie until 11 iIIO.
Then we all retired, Mmling our foreman
snoring in nu I w knew there was no
danger ol wild animals coming in camp.
The next morning our foreman culled
lis ut ft :!i, be preferring to lay tn led un
til breakfast was readv, which be did
manfully.
After breakfast, with tools; and lunch
on Hack, we proceeded to the mines, two
inilci above camp, arriving at H o'clock.
Our foreman laying the plans, concluded
to run w hat ia called a crosscut to a.rike
the lodge at considerable depth under
ground After motiving several tons of
rock and dust we proceeded to blast,
John Turpin manipulating the terrible
giant ponder.
Our lirst blast doing hut little good
we proceeded to put in another which
did not go at all. We then concluded
that the powder was frozen. After lav
ing it iijar tho the we found that we
were correct. The rock noticing hard,
one of the party concluded to pit' k for
the froien stick of powder that did not
go off, cutting it in two with bis pick,
and the w 'hole crowd congratulated them
selves thut they were not blown up.
Alter removing tho froien atick, with
groat care we pne-eeded to use the pow
der we had thawe lout with good success,
tilling the uir with broken quart."..
Alter tailoring very hard until 3 !'. M.
our furemitn and tut self concluded to tish
down stream to camp, catching an
abundance of fine mountain trout. Ar
riving at camp we found the rest of the
Party had supper all ready ; but we de
layed it a shnrt time by preparing a fine
mess of trout, which we all relitdied
ufter a bard day's labor,
Alter ripier whs over we bid a jolly
timo around the camp lire until H I. M.,
when we all retired for the night, expect
ing to have peuceful slumbers. Hut we
worn diaturlnr-d alsjiit 2A.M. by the
loud report ol a revolver, and all sprang
up f xiK'cltng to sen a band of wild In
dians, but found it was our foreman
shooting at lomething climbing nround
over our cabin. Wo were unable to
find out what it was, but it made n great
deal ol noise on leaving he cabin . From
that on we were continually awakened by
the loud dies of wild varmints
Our loreiuan going out lo ace about
bis horse found that lie hud broken loose
and lied. Asking one of the men to ac
comiHiny he gave chase, capturing the
horse about one mile above Cedar Camp,
tangled in the rosi he was drugging. He
arrived back to camp at 7 ;3U A. M. with
the sweat upon his brow.
After breakfast, without having had a
sniheient amount of sleep, we proceeded
to the mine through a torrent of rain
which litatedall diy.
We proceeded to drill and blast with
good results until 4:ItO 1'. M. when our
loreiuan called "time." Then we wad
dled our way back t camp; hut oh, how
it did r iin! Then we all act to getting
up wood (or a night lire to Veep off the
wild varmints which by this tune were
beginning tn sound their gentle voices.
Alter the tire wan built and supper over
wo all had a good time except our pow
der man, who was tired out after hi
chase over the mountain after the horse
and hia bard day's labor at the mine. He
retired ul tl l'. M., while the balance of
the crowd amused themselves, singing
and telling bear stories until 1::H 1', M.
We were surprised to see our foreman
stay up so late, as we all exported he
would be played out before this. Hut he
said he was hound to slay with the crow d
il tl Hut Hurt.
Atfer retiring wo were continually
awakened by tho cries of wild beivits un
til about 12 o'clock, when our foreman
and powder man, getting tired of the
racket, tlxed a atick of giant powder,
took tho shot gun and two revolvers, and
going about tidy yards from the cabin
commenced tiring and yelling, keeping
it up lor Home tune. Keturniug to camp
we hoard nu more noise during the
night. After a quiet slumber of a few
hours wo heard our foreman'a gentle
voice bidding ua arise, which we did. and
found tho sky was clear overhead.
After breakfast we took our usual trip
to tho mines, A few hours' work brought
us to the ledge we wero digging for, when
our foreman called time for consultation.
It was concluded to blast out enough of
the rock for testing purposes, A charge
of four sticks of powder was exploded,
filling the uir with rocks. The foreman
tinal powder man being too clone to the
vhiMgo were cracked ou tho bond by
fulling rocks, cunning nu Utile diHsntis
tion. Alter rubbing their heads they
concluded to keep ut a safer distance
hereafter.
At 4 1'. M. we gathered ami placed
our tools safely awuy, to bfc used some
future day.
On our way to ramp what should we
overtake hut a huge black bear ; and nil
the weapons we had was a coffee-put,
hatchet and butcher-knife. Our fore
man had a revolver, but being ho fur he
hind lib couldn't get a shot at Bruin who
escaped unhurt while we kept our way
to camp.
After supper the cook was congratulated
by the rest ol the party for bis good be
havior und excellent cooking; then
three cheers were given for our worthy
foreman and powder man, und likewise
for the roustabouts. Then followed our
usual entertuiument which lusted until
10 l M.
Having a good night's rest wo arose
bright and early, packed our bUnkuts.
and made our way up the mountain to
Cedar Camp, where wo found our wagon
waiting, into which, after helping our
foreman hitch his horse to his buggy,
we ull piled, homeward bound.
