Fur Week Finllnir Niilunliiy Jmm II
Tho Week has been cool and pin t
ly cloudy, with light sprinkles of
ruin on Sunday, Momluy nnd Sutur
day. Tim rainfall was liyU und
did not much more than to lay th
dust, Vegetation of nil kind
would he heiieliled hy good Heavy
rains, and especially would the
wheat crop bo benefited. The
weathur, however, has not been in
jurious to crops, tho cool, cloudy
lays being nioro beneficial than
cloudless warm days would be, but
rain is what is needed for the
growth nnd maturing of gntiiif
and vegetables.
Haying is generally in progress,
and light yields aro generally re
ported. The continued dry weather
proved to bo qui to injurious to the
hay crop in most sections.
The full and early sown spring
wheat is in good condition. They
would bo benefited by rain, but if
no tlry north winds prevnil the crop
will average very well. Tho late
sown spring grain continues to le
in a p,mr condition, and less than
oiio-hulf tho average, from spring
sown grain is exiected. Hurley,
rye uiul oats are doing quite well.
Corn bus a slow growth owing to
the cool weather. Hups tire reported
as progressing nicely. Vineyards
arc heulthy and excellent projiei-ts
nre shown by thcni. F.untern Ore
gon crop reports are more hopeful
than from the Willamette valley,
Fruit, however, in the Willamette
valley is in us fine condition an
could lie desired, and southern Ore
gon promises to exelipxe former
years by her fruityield. The straw
berry crop is becoming exhausted,
and cherries aro now plentiful in
the market.
The rivers continue to fall slowly,
and rcorts do not indicate that
there is much snow to Ih melted.

least exsMisive. This is accom
plished by spraying the trees with
London purple or Paris green, us
ing one pound of either to one hun
dred and fifty gallons of water.
Paris green is a compound of arsenic
and copper. It is a far more pow
erful jMiison than arsenic alone,
and is not soluble in water, hence
it will remain much longer on
tho trees, London purple is an
other arsenical compound. It is
the residue from the niunufacture
of aniline dye, and contains lime,
nrsonuous acid and carbonaceous
matter. It is soluble, more adhe
sive and less poisonous than Paris
green. It is Udter to wet the pow
der thoroughly and make a paste
before putting it into the vessel of
water, that it may not form lumps.

caused by forcing tho liquid, by
means uf a force pump, through a

important thing is to scatter the
spray on all the fruit.
WI1KN TO SPRAY,
The codlin moth, soon after the
fruit sets, lays her eggs upon the ca
lyx or blossom end of the young
ft-uit. The grub, as soon as hutched,
eats its way into tho center of the
young fruit, and there, growing with
its growth, works its mischief. In
its. early Btato tho young fruit is
erect, itst calyx or blossom end up
wards, and tho least particle of
poisoned water falling upon it is
sufliciont to destroy tho young
worm whon it attempts to eat its
way into tho fruit. Therefore, tho
best and most opportune, time fbr
spraying the tree is soon after the
fruit is set, and when it is about the
siao of a small pea. Experience
teaches, however, that it is not safe to
depend on tho one early spraying to
accomplish tho results sought for,

Appiopi lalliuii for Oregon,
Relative to the river and harbor
bill which piumed tho house, Mr.
Iferiiiitnii Mays that it is tho most
satisfactory bill of the kind that was
ever passed. Ho congratulated con
gr. su on its work, and said that
w bile this would be welcome tidings
to tln pimple of tho great lakes on
the North, theCulf on tho South
und the large and smaller rivers of
tho Atlantic side, it would bo more
heartily welcomed by the expectant

He Huid it was appropriate at this
stage of a bill in which tho water

loyally remembered to read to the

Oregon items were all passed as re

A Sintrnliir Case.
The Port Townsend Call reports
that a young girl named Clara
Walton, aged 17 years, hud died on
Tuesday evening, but the body has
not yet btvn interred, ns there ap

body is limp, totally unlike tho rig

life-like uppeurunee, and tho enso is
puzzling and extraordinary. Elec

A man once said to Dr. Hccs:
' You are whitening fast." The
loctor answered him in a sermon
which ho preached immediately af
ter: " lhcre u a wee white flower
which comes up through the snow
and frost; but we are glad to see
the snow-drop because it proclaims
that tho winter is ovr nnd that tho
summer is at bund. A friend re
minded mo lust night that I was
whitening fast. But heed not that,
rot her; it is to mo a proof that my
winter will soon lie over; that I
shall have done presently with the
cold cast winds nnd tho frosts of
the earth, and that my summer
my eternal summer is at hand."
Tho newspapers of Oregon, and
tho public generally, aro warned
against a one-horse, barn-storming
combination, which has just arrived
in the state. The outfit consists of
two men and ono woman, who give

and left on the early boat yestorday
morning without settling their bills.

Virtue of Apple Sauce.
Probably not one in a thousand
of tho many persons who eat ap
plo suuee with roast goose or roast
pork havo any idea why such a
condiment should be used in these
particular cases. Yet tho custom
is based, if not on exact science,
certainly on a knowledge of the
properties of tho apple, as well as
upon observation. Tho malio acid
of tho apple tends to neutralizo any
excess of chalky matter engendered
by eating too much, and it also
serves to eliminate from the body all
noxious mattors, which if retained,
would make tho brain hoavy and
dull, or lead to jaundice or skin
eruptions.
Apple sauce aids digestion, which,
in tho case of the rich meats with
which it is usually associated,-;
would be sluggish.
