John James Patterson, of Sout Caro
lina, Republican, six years.
Justin S. Morrill, of Vermont, Re
publican, twelve years.
Timothy O. Howe, of Wisconsin, Re
publican, eighteen years.
lroni the above it will be seen, that
twenty of the twenty-four are now serv
ing their first term, two are in the sec
ond term, and one, Mr. Howe, of Wis
consin, is a third term Senator. Politi
cally the out-goers comprise sixteen
Republicans, eight Democrats. The
Senate stands at present thirtv-eight
Republicans, one Anti-Monopolist (Mr.
Booth, of California), two Conserva
tives (the Virginia Senators) , and thir
ty five Democrats. Counting Mr.
Booth with the Republicans and the
Virginia Senators with the Democrats,
makes the figures thirty-nine Republi
cans and thirty seven Democrats, If
the Democrats, therefore, make a gain
of only one in the elections which will
be held to nil the vacant places, the
Senate will be tied politically, while
the Democrats need a gain of two only
in order to have a majority.
A Fearful Journey.
On the arrival of the 1:50 New York
express at the Great Western Railway
here, Tuesday morning, the men en
gaged in testing the car wheels and run
ning gear of the cars were surprised to
see a man stowed away upon the trucks
of one of the sleeping cars a position
in which it is as much as any one s life
is worth to ride even the shortest dis
tance. The policeman in charge of the
station, Mr. l'arr, was informed of the
circumstance, and at once arrested and
searched the man, finding only six cents
in money, and some papers on his per
son. On being questioned as tv his
motive for placing himself in such a
dangerous position, the man said his
name was .Lenox ana that he had been
working in Emmett, where he had re-
Emmett, paying his fare to London, be
yond which point his money ran out.
Being determined to reach Buffalo I
somehow, and not knowing of any
means of doing the journey so quickly
except by rail, he stowed himself away
on the truck under the car. and there
he had remained until discovered at !
Hamilton. Let the reader if it is pos-
Uible, form a conception, the faintest
idea, of the perils of such a journey,
and then it mav be nossible to nmlor.
I stand what the poor, grief-stricken Oer-
l man must nave suffered. Xlie distance

would have launched the poor fellow
into eternity at once. And then think
of the agonv he must have suffered
from the dust, sand and derbis thrown
up by the swiftlv nviug train, and the
crreat tension on the nerves and sinews
by being compelled to maintain his
hold on the truck. The policeman

made Wednesday afternoon, the scenery
is fine and -wild, with snow-streaked
mountains and fine fiords, but less fine
and wild than the scenery south of
Tromsoe. Hammerfest is the most
northern town, of Europe, in latitude
70 deg. 40 mm. It is a small wooden
town of about 2.000 inhabitants, with a
good church and excellent schoolhouse.
We do not stop long, for the captain
will show us his Midnight Majesty off
the North Cape, and six or seven hours
are needed to bring us to the rock,
which looks out directly to the Pole;
and at 11 p. m. we are gazing up at the
stupendous cliff, which rises, almost a
sheer precipice of black rock, 900 feet
out of the Arctic Ocean. We gaze off
toward the north, where the east and
west meet in the simultaneous rising
and setting of the sun. But his Mid
night Majesty was coy. He shined,
but he didnotshow. "We saw his glory,
which he could not wholly hide, mak
ing the cloud drapery which he drew
about him, beautiful by his presence,
and laying the pavement of the sea with
fair colors. The glow deepened to the
hour of hi3 pause on the horizon and
heightened into the morning light as
he turned to mount the heavens, refus
ing to take rest. We saw the trailing of
his garments, but could not look upon
the brightness of his countenance, and
while we were gazing at the continu
ous glory of the clouds, """one moment
marked the death of the old and the
birth of the new day.
We were five days within V e possi
bility of seeing the midnight iun, and
did not see it, unless a glimpse of him
at 1 a. si., might be so called. But it
was not all disappointment. Hands
cannot paint, I doubt if colors can, the
beauty of the serene morning ligl
yesieruay merges into to-morrow, on
some night "when the heavens are
bare," and the atmosphere is clear and
still. Bright as day. the hours have a
cool, pure charm of their own, which
transmits the prose of daylight into
poetry. Every night mountain, sea and
sky are bathed in a crystaline clearness,
which is the sun's light without the
sun's passion, and the heavens and
earth seem born anew, basking in a
celestial brightness, from which the
heat of the world's steam has passed
away. This land of the north wind
shows equally the power of the atmos
phere with Egypt and the East. It is
equally the Mount of the earth's trans
figuration. The majesty of its forms
takes in a new and strange beauty from
its skies, and awakens the ''sense sub
lime of something far more deeply in
terfused," which teaches the impressive
lesson and remains a perpetual joy.

The Piirajrraplier of the Picayune.
While the fever has been taking away
the people of New Orleans by hundreds,
and the death wagon has been going
through the streets, the humorous col
umn of the Picayune has never failed,
nor has it assumed the tone of grief.
Every day the faithful paragraphist has
had his little joke about the people who
ask SCO for a ton of ice. lie has said
that they will some time find a place
where it cannot he got for even twice
the money, and has warned them not to
come to New Orleans at present. He
has had his little joke at the country
villages that have established a quar
antine against New Orleans, a3 the on
ly means of letting the people know
that such a place existed. When lie
learned that the Buffalo police had
sent $2G0 he said: "Let us hear no more
of the clubbing together of policemen."
Later on he advised the doctors "to
pool their issues; the yeljow fever must
go." And with a tinge of sarcasm he
notices the fact that the "season at
fashionable Northern watering places
is ubout to close, and then our poor
refugees will be obliged to enjoy them
selves in the crowded citigs." When
