count of McDonald's career in San Fran

when Mercer pulled his pistol ami fired
several times at his opponent, one shot

a shop across the street. Poor Macdonald
was taken to his home in East Portland,

Mercer was arrested and lodged in the
county jail.

Hugh Curran of Eagle creek, was going
home from past Portland in his wagon,
and when near Milwaukio a large burn-

It is seldom that tho public leeliug has
been so much aroused into a spirit of in
dignation as it was on the 20th in.-t. Im
mediately upon the intcleigencoof the ac
cident to Capt. Macltio having been made
icnown to a number of the prominent cit
izens of our city (some of them warm
personal friends' of his) they made all
possible fci'i'oi is to render what assistance
was necessary anil available. Tho Cap
tain, having decided not to have any sur
gical attendance until he readied "l'ort
land, it was necessary to make suitable
arrangements to remove Mr. Mackio by
the afternoon train. An inmrovised
stretcher was arranged through the kind
offices of Messrs. Charman, Sr. and Jr.,
under the directions of Dr. Davis. These
gentlemen, assisted bv Messrs. J. Eogus,
M.andJI. E. Cross, G. Elliot and J. E.
itarlo'w, escorted tho unfortunate gentle
man to the depot. On thy arrival' of the
train these gentlemen were very anxious
to have the Captain placed on the cars iri
as easy and comfortable position as possi
ble. With this object in view they sought
the conductor of thy tiain and mentioned
to him the serious condition the Captain
was in, and respectfully requested of him
to do all he could to make the Captain's
journey io Portland as comfortable as
the accommodations would allow. This
high-lonod oiUcial, nut only refused
to vouchsafe any assistance to that effect,
but insultingly told the.n that they would
have to do the best they could ; that he
had no lime to bother with such cases; and
ordered them in a surly and offensive
manner to " hurry up;" otherwise, tiiej'
would be left behind. Such conduct as
the above deserves tho unmitigated con-,
sure of pu'.ilic opinion. Persons

drinking heavily during the afternoon,
and about dark he started, as ho said,
to ford the river. As it is not, and nev
er has been fordable at that point, the

was paid to the remark. He leaves a

The troting race at Walla Walla on
the 19th was really fine. Tho contest
was between LeTviston, Goldfoil, Sut
ton and Black Boss. Goldfoil won tho
first heat it: 2:16; Lewiston tho second
in 2;10; Black Bess the third in 2:40;
Lewiston the fourth in 2:'3SH and the
fifth in 2:10. At least two thousand
people were present and witnessed the
contest.
A Lafyelte correspondent of the Mc
Minnvlllo Reporter says: The county
court on Monday of this week futher
discussed Mr. Dale's books, and a
nnnibor of his bondsmen were present.
We understand they will not pay with
out a contest, as thero seems to be a
grave question among them as to their
liability. There aro two official bonds,
and only two additionial tax bonds for
the four years. It is claimed that their
should have been a tax bond every year,
and it is' also claimed that the county
has not dealt fairly in this respect with
the secureties.

The Republican convention of Wash
ington Territory will meet at Vancouver
in the 9th of October.
The Walla Walla Statesman says that
Hon. A. G. Newland, late speaker of
the house, is a possible candidate for
delegate on the Republican ticket.
Hon. N. T. Caton, Democratic candi
date for delegate to Congress from Wash
ington territory, w ill at once enter upon
his canvass of tho Territory. T?he can
vass will open in the eastern counties
and close on the Sound.
An elderly German, named Hoffman,
of Lewis river, was burned to death
last week. The forest fires had reached
his barn, and in attempting to save
some articles from the burning building
he was overcome bv heat, and falling,
vas literally roasted.
Seattle Tribune: The hop crop in
this portion of the Territory has never
been gathered in a finer condition than
this year. Tho hops aro unusually
large, of exceptional fine quality, and
uncommonly well matured. The
yield is not as large as formerly, but
what is lost in quanty is made up in
quality.
Old man Sliderberg, who lives on
the Lacamua four miles from anywhere,
come into Vancouver on Tuesday. He
tells doleful tales of hardships and nar
row escapes from death while he and
his aged wife were trying to hold their
own against forest tires. They slept
nights in the woods in spots that had
burned over, as the house was into
great danger to stay in, trees fell
around and near them, and they were
as near frightened out of their wits as
tvas possible, for a week. He climbed
over four miles of down timber to get
