About Bonnets.
"There's never so much pleasure i'
wearing a bonnet the second year, espe
cially when the crowns are so chancy,
never two summers alike," says Mrs.
Tullirer to Mrs. Pullet in the Mill on the
Floss, in that admirable scene where
the versatile genius of the writer depicts
the family conclave on the bonnet; and
the remark holds good now, for the
capote of last year cannot he made to
tide over another winter; the soft crown,
the Normandy and the plaited to the
stiff plain one, which Virot and other
French milliners have adopted; and now
plain satin bonnets of a dull shade of
red of the most antiquated make are fin
ished with very little trimming, and are
among the most sylish for winter wear,
but they are severely plain.
Another style is adapted by a celeb
rated French house the "Maison
Felix" for receptions or full dress is
nothing but a double wreath of flowers;
these are large double pansies of velvet,
or Marshal Ney roses, or the General
Jacquiminot rose, or some other large
flowers arranged in a double wreath on a
wire band, and this forms the hat, the
back being composed of tulle veils of
color, or of black or white, which hang
almost to the waist. This style is known
as the "St. Felix" and is very elegant.
A modification of this had been shown
here among this season's bonnets; it has
a front of tulle, lace, flowers and rib
bons, and the crown is left open to
show the comb. White bonnets are
much worn for dress occasions, and are
of plush, clouded satin, terry or uncut
velvet and satin; white feathers and
whito iearl ornaments are used with
white flowers for trimmings.
Marie de Medicis and Marie Stuart
bonnets have the front shirred on wires,
the outside of some dark shade, the in
side of a contrasting light one. These
are drossy bonnets, and are much af
fected by Gengotte, one of the well
known French milliners. The "ber
gere" or sheperdess, a creation of Vir
ot's, is a most artistic but most trying
affair, needing a pretty, fresh face to
show it off; its sides are held down by
the ribbon, which passes over the crown
and ties beneath the black hair; it is
generally of some light shade of plush.
The Kabagas shape is still a favorite,
and in felt or fur beaver there are many
of the large baring shapes of round hats,
whieh are half bonnets, and among
which the "mousquetaire," with its
long, drooping feathers, is about the
most graceful. The fur beavers are
never much trimmed; they are turned
up at the sides with some quaint orna
ment, and have a handsome feather,
but those shown from Yirot's are almost
like riding-hats.
Dark rich tints are preferred for street
bonnets; dark green, with light blue
feathers, or the deep shades of red,
such as mulberry, in which all the vary
ing tints of fruit are repeated in the
feathers and ribbons shaded from light
red to dark red brown, and with this
garnet ornaments are used. Claire de
lune gray is another of this season's
favorite tints; when used everything
corresponds; the hat perhaps is of . kid,
the feathers, the ribbon, the silk
flowers, the bead trimmings in the same
shade. Dark blue, in plush or velvet
is also much used for bonnets. Black
velvet is of course as popular as ever.
Jet is much used with it particularly
fringes of jet which hang from the
edges of the coronet shaped fronts, or
droop over the stiff crowns. Bands of
colored plush in such shades as sul
phur, rose, pink, pale blue or crocus
yellow are used on the front edges of
black velvet hats. Ostrich tips are
made to curl over the front edges, and
ostrich feathers no locger droop over
the black, but are also set with tips, or
ends, falling over the front edge. Face
trimmings are composed of shirred satin
or 2lush formed into coronets, or eJsj
full ruches of cheneille-odged lace are
worn. Strings are invariably found on
all winter bouncts; they are of shaded
satin, of double faced satin or plush
or they ire stiff with gold embossed fig
ures woven on colored backgrounds.

How to Cook Ducks. Tamo and
wild ducks are prejiared alike. If young
the web will be soft, and the under
part of the bill bend easily. If you are
suspicious of the flavor, parboil tuem
for five minutes with a piece of carrot
placed within, and then lay in cold wa
ter for an hour. Y'ou may stuff them or
not; if you use dressing, put in an abund
ance of sage and onions. Bake in a hot
oven; if they are young, it will not re
quire more than half an hour to cook.
Baste at first with hot water, and after
wards dredge with a little flour to brown
them nicely. Ihey are very fat (or
should be so to be good), and will need
to be basted often, and turned once or
twice. Add the giblets, which you have
previously stewed, to the gravy; thick
en it a little, season with a pinch of cay
enne and pour in a gravy boat.
Apple sauce and green pease are th e
almost invitable accompianments of bak
ed ducks, but turnips are very nice.
They may be boiled whole, or in slices.
or cut with a vegetable cutter, or mash

Salad Without Oil. Take a lettuce,
remove the outer leaves, wash, drain it,
thoroughly, and cut it into small pieces;
take some fresh-cut garden cress (also
washed and drained), and two small on

following dressing: Take the yolks of
two nard boned eggs, and rub them
quite smooth in a mortar, add a teas
poonful of mustard, a little cayenne,
witn biacK pepper and salt to taste, and
four or five teaspoonf uls of cream lastly,
add two teaspoonf uls of tarragon vino

Whenever and Wherever
Diseases of a choleraic type prevail, or
there is cause to apprehend a viiit from them,
the system should be toned, regalated and re
inforced by a course of Hostetter's Stomach
Bitters. Perfect digestion and a regular habit
of body are the best safeguards against such
maladies, and both are secured bv this inestim
able tonic and alterative. The Bitters are also
extremely serviceable in remedying Buch dis
orders. If promptly taken in bilious colic,
diarrha-a and cholera morbus, the disease is
usually frustrated. In diarrhoea cases, it is
only necessary to restore the tone of the relax
ed bowels, and this is one of the specific effects
of this medicin i. Wind on the stomach, heart
burn, biliousness, nausea, headache and other
symptoms of disturbance in the gastric and he

excellent remedy. A3 a family medicine it is
invaluable, since it promptly and completely
remedies those ailments which are of most fre

Our Commission TraJf.
THE WKLL-KNOWN HOUSE OF H. K. CUMMINOS A CO.
Oue of the most important branches of indus
try engaged in by our citizens is that of the Pro
duce Commission trade, which has assumed
vast projx)rtiona and shows the growing import
ance of Hxn Francisco as a distributing center.
This mode of transacting business has been re
duced to a system and is mutua.lv beneficial to
both producer and consumer. Without these
houses what a confusion would exist in the dis
tribution of products and their quick exchange.
It saves the producer in various ways time,
trouble and expense and enables the consumer
to obtain what he needs quickly and cheaply.
We propose iit this article, for the benefit of
our readers, to give a brief description of one
of the leading houses in this line that has for
the past nineteen years figured conspicuously
among the commission interests of tiie coast.
We refer to tlio house of 11. K. Cummings .V
Co., of No. 421 Battery street, corner of Wash
ington, who do a general commission business
in all kinds of fruit, farm and dairy produce,
disposing of immense quantities of the same
for producers in all parts of tho State. These
gentlemen are probably as well and favorably
known as any other firm on the coast, and it is
to their own exertions that they owe their well
earned success. When first established (1857)
the business was carried on in a verv limited
way, Mr. Cummings occupying a stand in the
market where he sold the f ruit that was raised
in the Oakland gardens the first raised in tho
State. In 185!) the business more than doubled
itself, necessitating the removal of Mr. Cum
mings from his stall in the market to a large,
commodious store. The firm, although starting
on a comparative limited scale, has, through in
tegrity and fair dealing, built up an enviable
trade which enables them to not only dispose of
products quickly but to obtain tho highest mar
ket rates entirely in tho interest of their corres
pondents. Another advantage of consigning to
such a house as this is that no quantity is too
large for them to handle and consignments can
bo drawn against immediately instead of be ing
obliged to wait as is often the case with smaller
houses until the goods are sold. The firm oc
cupy a high position in commercial circles for
the strict and reliable maimer iu which they
carry on their business, and it gives us pleasure
to bring them prominently before tho further
consideration of our readers and tho trade
everywhere. ,S'. F. Commercial.

MARSH TRUSS CO.. 5i. Montgomery St. aen
tlemer.: I had been suffering from RUPTURE for
over 22 years and had used different styles of Truss
es, but could obtain no relief from them. Seeing
your advertisement, I called upon you about two
years ago. und was fitted with one of Dr. Marsh's
Pu tent Trusses. After wearing the same for six
mouths, to my surprise I found that I was entirely
cured, and have worn no Truss since, now over IS
months. I say u. my surprise, as I w as VI years old
at that time. I mak this statement that others, as
well as yourselves, may be benefitted by IL Wish
ing sou every success, I give you liberty to make
any use of thM letter you may deem proper.
Yours Respectfully,
FRANK MERRILL.
Corner Stockton and Pacific Sts.
Dr. Lewis A. Say re, of New York, says he is in
the habit of applying Dr. Marsh's Patent Truss to
the exclusion of all others, and in an experience of
IS years found in a majority of cases a radical cure
of Rupture was effected In a very few mouths. His
letter given below issiinicieut authority to conviuce
the Ruptured of the superior qualities of DR.
MARSH'S CURATIVE TRUSSES, they having a
reputation of nearly 00 years and attained such a
degree of perfection that the principal Physicians
of this city recommend them in preference to other
makes. Read the following :
No. 7.H lluoACWAY, Nkw York.
I have been In the habit of applying and recom
mending the Tiuts manufactured by Dr. S. N.
Marsh for the last eighteen years, to the cxcliisijii
of ail others, and have faun 1 it to give g -nerul sat
isfaction, effecting a radical cure , In the ruwjurity of
cases in a very few mouths As a Truss for the rad
ical cure of Hernia, I think it far preferable to uny
I have ever examined.
