Sa.xdv, Jan. lGth, 1S7S.
EniTou Esteri'kise . As no one seems
to write up the doingsof this partof Clack
amas county, I just thought I would send
you a few items, to let you anil your read
ers understand that we are not dead, but
livtth, if we do sojourn away out on the
frontier, where the bear and the puuthcr
prowleth by night, seeking whose sheep
or pigs, or perchance some innocent calf,
he may devour.
The holiday festivities were inaugurated
by a Christmas tree at the Foster settle
ment, Christmas eve. Presents were lilt-'
orally distributed by Santa Clause much
to the terror of the little ones at hi.- vener
able appearance), presents consisting of
candy, nuts, saur kraut and other fixings
too numerous to mention. A dance also
at Sandy 1. O. Christmas eve. Christmas
ni.:ht, a'l the young and some ot the old
as. em bled at "the residence of our jolly
merchant, Mr. Kevenue, where they en
gaged in the festive dance. Music" was
rendered by the Sandy string band.
' Gayly and gayly rang tl e gay music,
The iily the merry music of viol and horn ;
The mad merry music that set them all
lancing,"'
Till over the midnight eamo stealing
the morn."
The generous host and hostess ( who
never do anything by halves ) ministered
to the creature comforts of their guests by
a most bountiful rcpa-t, consisting of oys
ters, chickens, cakes, and, in fact, every
thing that goes to make up a first-class
supper. So they ate and they danced, and
they danced "till the morning, and never
went home till the dawn of tlio day," to
assemble -again at the residence of Mr.
N. McCord on New Years eve, when they
had a good ti:ne,dan-ed"till the wee small
hours, "then wended their way homeward.
Friday evening, Jan. Uth, a few ot tho
young people gathered at Hie residence of
Mr. P. I. Hatch. They spent a very pleas
ant evening in dancing and merriment,
and went ho, r.e at 11 o'clock, ending the
holiday festivities for this season.
Having disposed of the holidays, I will
enlighten you a little on farming" matters.
Firstly, our new grist mill 'on Cellar
creek is doing a good business, and mak
ing an extra ipialiiy of llocr.
Our farmers have sown an unusual
quantity of ".viieat this year, and every
settler who has an acre of ground ch ared
is sowing it to wheat fr their next year's
bread. Wheat is looking splendid.
Our county is settling up very fast. most
ly by l iermans, and the sound of the ax,
with-tho constant -crashing of the mighty
nioiiarchs of the forest, as they lay their
stately heads in the dust, hears ample tes
timony to the energy, industry and perse
verance of the sturdy settler.
Hoping to wake up some of the more
gifted in It tier writing. I remain Yours
Truly. FuoNTir.u.
Grand liirtlulay Celebration.
Perhaps tho happiest time in a man's
life, excepting the day when he takes to
himself a partner "for better or worse," is
the moment the chx-k announces that he
is a voter' that he has reached his twenty
first year and is no more to be considered
a boy. On Monday last our old friend.
Frederick Charman reached this happy
goal in li.'i; and celebrated in a most de
light fill man ner to 1 1 is friends and credita
ble way to himself his 21st "jour do fete."
Invitations for a grand par'iy had been
sent abroad and in this vie'tnity, and
fi;en:ls arrived from all quarters to htl p
Fred celebrate this auspicious occasion
Pope's Hall was scoured for tho dancer ,
and right merrily the immense throng
tripped the measures. Mr. (.'has. I tray's
celebrated orchestra from Portland was
engaged and discoursed such sweet music
that it would have been dirlicult for crip
ples to remain seated during its perform
ance. Major Thomas '!iarui:tu, the father
of the happy Fred, being one of t he oldest
residents of the Siate, saw to it that the
-invitations were among the best people of
Oregon, and we venture to say that never
before has there been a party in the Wil
lamette Valley which was so largely at
tended, and at the same time so select.
Ihiring the evening, M r. C. M . I nskeep,
on the partof the many friends of the
young host, presented him with an elegant
gold-headed cane, with some very appro
priate remarks, neatly expressed". Fred,
on accepting- the cane, did so with trracca
of manner and speech ipiile tl asing hii
friends that mi" just on the threshold of
manhood eor.ld so readily and elegantly
reply on an occasion that'would have em
barrassed many an older head. An ele
gant banquet was served at t he Oil!' 1 louse,
of which nearly t wo hundred people par
look.. All the jlelr aei.-s of the se;tson
were served iu" abundance, and all the
little delicious dishes that go to make a
supper of this I-.ind a success Were pro-
led in prolusion. Tho dancing was re
sumed atter the refn .s ioe nts, and the
enjoyments of the "mazy" kept up until
"jocund day," and tired' nature told th-'
happy young people that it was tune to
desist. Pevonl a!l doubt this was the
grandest, yet pleasantest allairofthe kind
ever given in Oregon Citv, and our oul v
regret is that Fred Charma'u's t went y-ti rst
birthday, like birth itself, comes only once
m a life-time.

CHRISTMAS.
Merry Christmas to all is ringing to-day,
Through mansion and cottage and far, fat
away ;
Across the blue ocean is heard the refrain,
Merry Christmas to all I it is Christmas
again.
Merry Christmas to all, through the
breadth of the land,
May peace and good will, journey hand
joined in hand, .
And enter each household, and fill every
breast
With contentment and charity, peace hope
aiul rest.
Merry Christmas to all, the patter of feet.
And laughter of childhood, in cadences
sweet,
Steals soft on the air, like a breath of the
morn,
All laden with fragrance from sweet in
cense borne.
Merry Christmas to all, those words of
good cheer,
From lips long since silent, lised in
our ear,
Still greets us in memory 'on each Christ
mas morn,
Though the voices that whisper are of
heaven born.
