Cnors. Within the past week we have
met a large number of farmers, from vari
ous parts of. the county, and from all we
hear the same encouraging story -crops
of all kinds looking well. There are many
more acres in grain this year than last,
and Clackamas county may le put down
for a larger yield than eve- before. The
prospective prices, too, make tdad the
hearts of all having cr;ps coming on.
There will Ik nior-' 'mortgages lifted in
tin county this year than in any one year
before, and wo "hope the lesson will be
taken to heart so that there will lienn
moie borrowing money at a high rate of
interest, with the homestead as security.
Oood crops and good prices rarely come
along together, as they do this year, and
we congratulate our farmers on their bril
liant prospects. While the prospects for
a large vield and good prices look favora
ble now, it would Ik? well, however, to re
member that "there is many a slip 'twixt
the cup and the lip," and not build too
inanv ''castjes in the air."

The "tenor" of our "I Iome"-sick farmer's

"to whose im partial judgment I will abide,

more: That he read tin fable entitled the
"Ass in the Eion's Skin" and abide by the
moral. And now, with an apology to the

Shocking 3Imlcr at Tort Town
send. On Friday last, Capt. Chas. Howard,
of Port Townseml, was shot and killed
by Henry L. Sutton, a saloon keeper
there. There had been a quarrel be
tween them a few days before about a
dog. Friday afternoon 'Howard was
standing in front of the saloon engaged
in conversation with some one, when
Sutton, who had evidently been drink
ing, came to the door and called out to
him in a gruff, irate tone: "Say. come
hero Howard, I ward you!"' Howard
made some replv about the place being
a bawdy house, and the.t lie didn't go
into such places. Sutton turned back
into the saloon in a fit of rage, and im
mediately came out witii a revolver and
commenced tiring. Howard was hit
twice; a shot in the abdomen was fatal.
After Suttou had emptied his revolver,
he turned to the ex-sheriff of the coun
ty, who was standing near, and said:
'"Damn yon; if I had another charge I
would send it through you on general
principles." Sutton then marched back
into tho saloon and, seizing a Henry
rifle standing behind the bar, threaten
ed that he would shoot anyone who
dared to interfere with him. lie then
weut behind the bar coolly, with his
rifle still in his hand, took what money
there was in the drawer, placed it in
his pocket, reloaded his revolver,
gathered up some effects he hail in th
saloon, took a double-barreled shot
gun, which whs also behind the bar,
wulked out on the wharf, got into his
boat, pulled her in under the wharf,
where he placed her in order to leave;
set sail and sailed ont of the harbor.
He shortly after fell in with the steamer
Favorite, and informed the Captain
that a safe 1-oM.ysry had been commit ted
in Townsend; that lie was in pursuit of
the burglars and must go to Victoria.
The Captain informed him that he
could not take him to Victoria,
upon which he told hira if ho could
and him at Dnngeness that would do.
He was taken to Dungeness, and as the
steamer was passing out of sight. on liar
way back, he was seen sailing out into
Straits in his boat. It is supposed that
m will take passage on some outward
bound vessel, if possible, for some for
eign port. The fact, says the Seattle
Intell!fe)ier, tout such a cold-blooded.
fiendish murder as that of Captain
Howard could be committed in broad
daylight in a town like Port Townsend.
before a throng of spectators, and the
heartless wretch who committed it be
allowed to escape as Sutton did, with
out even a man daring to raise his hand
against him, seems almost increilible
ind has hardly a parallel in tho annals
of crime. Still it is so.
