The Good Samaritan Hospital.
We recently availed ourself of an oppor
tunity to visit this institution. It is situ
ated on a high elevation in the north-west
ern part of Portland, commanding a fine
view of that city, the Willamette valley,
and the Cascade range. The building is
commodious, well ventilated, and cheerful
in every part. It is furnished with num
erous bath-rooms, lavatories and closets,
and is well supplied with hot and cold
water. The wards are clean, airy and
comfortable. Good reading, consisting of
books, periodicals, and late newspapers,
is provided in abundance for the sick, and
chaste and instructive pictures and mot
toes furnish rest and amusement for those
who are too weak for anv mental exertion.
The women's ward, recently titled up bv
the Guild of Trinity Church. Portland.
and the private rooms for lying-in patients
woum do credit to a much older establish
ment. Skillful nurses, male and female,
are emploj'ed, and the attending and con
sulting physicians rank among tne leaders
oT their profession! in Portland. This hos
pital commends itseit loan lovers 01 be
nevolent institutions. Though under the
auspices of the Portland Episcopal church,
it extends its benenis to an creeds and
distinctions of men. The same privileges
and advantages are offered to all, high or
low, rich or poor. Persons going from
the country to the city for treatment.
could nowhere obtain it more satisfactory
or economically than at this place. For SI
per day they will receive medic 11 care,
nroner diet, kind nursing, quiet, and pure.
sweet air, in a well ventilated apartment.
To the poor and unfortunate this hospital
opens its doors, and bids them come,
without money and wunouc price. Here
their teunxual wants will be all supplied,
and the last hours of life soothed by
Christian care and spiritual ministrations.
The I eginning of this work was made by
liishop Morris nearly two years since. Jt
was a venture of faith on his part, taken
With the hope that it would enlist the
sympathy and co-operation of all who are
interested in the care 01 the sick and suf
fering of earth. It has been a source of
much anxiety to him, and it is owing to
Ins personal unceasing and unselfish et
forts that the institution is what it is to
day. It is but the small beginning of a
work that is destined to grow, and extend
its influence nil over our State. All that
it now needs to insure success is greater
exertion on the part of her friends to direct
attention to its advantages and benefits,
and a more decided recognition of its ex
istence and its work. May it meet with
the measure of interest and confidence it
so richly deserves. Ueta.
Municipal Election.
The annual election for city officers took
place last Monda3', and resulted in the
triumph of the entire Republican ticket.
The Republicans put a straight ticket in
the field, while their opponents united
under the title of the "Young Men's tick
et." Both sides manifested considerable
interest in the offices of Recorder, Treas
urer and Marshal. The "Young Men"
did hot poll the necessary numlier of votes,
so we are called upon to chronicle their
defeat, but wish them better luck next
time. Good feeling prevailed throughout
the day, anil the defeated candidates for
municipal honors take their defeat in good
st vie.
Ti.e following is the vote for the differ
ent, candidates :

Important Decision. Heretofore there
has tK-en a difference of opinion among
our resident attorneys and local survej
ors, as well as citizens generally, as to
what survey would contro' 111 determin
ing the boundaries ot town lots in tins
city, some contending that th map and
lines made by R. N. Short, Esq., under
the direction 'of Dr. John McLaughlin,
would control, and others that the map
and lines made under the direction ot
Surveyor-General Preston would control.
At the late term of Circuit Court the mat
ter came directly in issue in a case tried
le fore Hon. II. P. Boise, Judge, who I eld
that under the 11th section of t he donation
law, the Surveyor-General of Oregon was
the officer authorized to ascertain where
the lots were located which were sold by
Dr. McLaughlin before th 4th of March
A. D. 1M49, and that the Preston survey
and man of the city, with the monuments
located bv him, must control in ascertain
ing the boundaries of lots. We regard
this as settling the uncertainty in refer
ence to the matter, and t -list all our citi
zens will be able to conform without in
convenience to themselves in adjusting
their improvements.
Pic-Nic The Sunday Schools of this

all, and a iolly good time may boexpected.
Exempt Certificates. The Board of
Delegates of the Fire Department has con
tracted with parties in New York to fur
nish 1.50 blank exempt certi.?cates for this
department, and as money is a scarce ar
ticle in the treasury, the Citjr Council will
be petitioned at the next meeting to fur
nish tho "wherewith." The cost ot the
certificates will lie about Sou, and we are
quite certain that the appropriation will
lie matte without delav by our City Dads.
It is certainly nothing but justice that the
firemen who have served "the city seven
years without remuneration should re
ceive this slight recognition.
