the Grand Jurors for the April term of
the al)ove entitled court for 1S77, would
resjectrnHy refwrt to the Hon. Court our
proceedings, as follows, to-wit: We examined-
pursuant to your instruction, the
crimes th At eattte to our knowledge. We
also examined the county cierk's and
sheriff's offices. They lotli are in as good
condition as the circumstances will per
mit, and the finances of the eountv are
well and properly conducted bv those
otlieers. The Court House building is not
tit for that purpose. It is bo small, the
ceiling of the court room is so low and the
ventillation is so poor that it is verv un
comfortable; and we reconitnend that the
County Court take some htejw toward
biiiiding a comfortable court house and
Jail. The present Jail is not fit for that
purpose in its present condition. The ven
tillation is Hitch as to make it unhealthy
tor the prisoners. And we recommend
t.iat the rubbish in the vard of the jail lie
taken away or cleared up. and the eel Is o
so ventilated as to make it tit for use until
the county can build a new one. Allot

Another Pioneer Goxk. Thomas Jef
ferson Hubbard, an old pioneer of this
State, departed this lite at the Umatilla
reservation April 24th, aged 7S years. The
deceased came to this eonntrv in 1S31, as
an employe of tho Pacific Fishing ar.d
Fur company, of l.oston, with whom he
remained until they sob! out to the Hud
son May company." After this he settled
on the" farm tvow owned by Medorutn
Crawford, at the mouth of the Vamhill
river. He was a irominent member of
the Provincial Government in 143. Short

who was a resident of Oregon City for
many years: "Ike Thurman, formerly of

White Clay. The Orcgnnian is not
aware that any Ix'd or deposit of w hite
clay has been discovered in this State.
Wake up. Mr. Oregoniati. and open your
eyes. This whin clay is found in abuit
dnice in Yamhill coiintv, and Mr. S. D.
Richardson, of this city, has laid on out
table a tine specimen which he obtained
on the Clackamas river a few miles north
east of this place.
Postponed. The promised letter from
Puttevill in regard totheShort-Huchanan
atlair has been jsist poned until the matter
has had an airing in the courts. Our cor
respondent says: "When the case comes
before the courts you will lind your ver
sion of the . affair nearer correct than any
thing published by other paiers to this
time."
Fishing Extraordinary.-- One day
last week Messrs. Van fhown, John Rev
enue and a hoy, while angling for trout at
the saw mill on Cedar creek, Sandy pre
cinct, caught 23. speckled Iwwities in 3l
hours. The tisli all averaged over eight
inches in length, and the party got tired
of hauling them out.
Horse Stolen. Mr. T. A. P. Sell wood
had a -duable horse stolen last Sunday
night in this city. He left the horse tied
to a fence while making a visit, and when
lie was ready to start for home the horse
was gone, aiid nothing has been heard of
it since.
