The Walla Walla valley and the
Snake river country is becoming
somewhat noted for raising llax seed.
The past year there has born .about
75,000 bushels raised, C0,Ki0 of this
-vas raised in the Snake river coun
try and 15,000 in the Walla Walla
valley. The Pioneer Oil Company,
at Salem, Oregon,'f niuished the seed
and take the crop at 2 cents per
pound.
How Some Farm Laborers Work.
It will snrpri-e many farmers who
consider that they are hard-worked,
or who employ men who creep out
to work at 7 in the morning and hur
ry home at 0 in the evening, to learn
how much work a large farmer in
Pennsylvania p;els out of hi laborers.
The farmer referred to is a Mr.
Young, of Dauphin county, near
Harris'ourg, who owns l.(M;0 acres
and employs thirty-live men. Mr.
Yonng has been visited by the cor
respondent of a London paper, who
writes as follows:"
"We arc surprised to learn the
amount of work that is expected nnd
obtained from the men. Our labor
era who imagine they will have easi
er times in America than at home
should note well the follow ing state
ment, which accurately describes the ;
dailv work during the Summer !
months on Mr. Young's farm. The :
hired servants are expected to be up
at 1 A. M., ready to milk and feed
the cows and dress the mule. At
4:"0 breakfast, consisting of cuil'te, j
salt meat, potatoes and bread, is j
served; at 5::0 the teams leave the i
stables, and do not return until 11 j
A. M., when they are watered and i
fed. And the hands have dinner, j
comprised of meat, Mmi and vegeia-
bles; work is resumed at 12 M. and I
continued till sundown, about 7:U0 j
during Summer. Mules are stabled
and fed at 8 P. M., or soon after
supper, and then to bed. The only
holiday is on Christmas day. and all
lost time is deducted, even in the
case of absence on account of illness
