Williams and Lane. Williams and
Lane addressed their fellow citizens
at Pope's Hall last Tuesday afternoon.
Mr. Lano complained of being indis
josed, and we therefore make some
allowance for his feeble elfort. Mr.
Williams made an excellent speech,
and was greeted with much enthusiasm.
Lane was laboring under considerable
disadvantage only seven Democrats
turned out to hear him, and they failed
to even applaud their candidate during
his whole speech. Lane's chances for
re-election are very slim, and he will
be beat in Clackamas county by about
two hundred.

Monday morning notice was given to
the boys and girls who were working
in the Alden Fruit-dryer that their
wages would be reduced'trom Scents to
(i cents per hour, and that thev would
have to work twelve hours "per day.
Tho majority of the young laborers
refused to work for the wages olfered,
and now eleven Chinamen and four
white boys are employed. Tho Celes
tials work for fifty cents a day. We
firmly believe that there would be
more profit in white labor at a dollar
per day than the Chinese at fifty cents,
but wo are not running the machine.

A farmer while waiting for the fer
ry boat at Chase's ferry last week, by
some means allowed his horses to get
started down hill, and they went into
the river. The horses seemed to enjoy
the bath, and the Granger managed to
turn them around in the middle of the
river while they were swimming. The
wagon was loaded with wheat, and,
strange to say, only one empty wheat
sack was lost. The Granger laid over
one day at t ho ferry to dry his wheat,
and then went on his way rejoicing.
The circus last Saturday, played to a
crowded house probably carrying o!f

was fair, but not so good as was expect
ed from tho llattering notices they re
ceived from the news' apers through

the sale of lots at the Soda Springs, in

Mr. Geo. LARixqCE, accompanied
by his sons George .and Alfonzo, left
for California on the last steamer. Mr.
LaRoeque has had poor health for
some time past and hopes to recuperate
in the warmer climate of the Golden
State. We hopo to seo him back ere
long well and hearty.

Mr. G. XV. Sharrock, residing on the
Sandy, has sold his farm to a German
immigrant. He reports that live or
six German families have moved into
that portion of the county recently.
They can't come any too fast.
Considerable complaint has been
made by our merchants lately on ac
count of their steamer freight being de
tained five or six days in Portland after
the arrival of the steamer. Whoso
fault is it?
The managers of tho Alden Fruit
Dryer havo had a private watchman
emplo3red to watch the building for the
past week, for fear that it would be
burned on account of the employment
of Chinese instead of white laborers.
Lane's chances for re-election are
about in proportion to the number of
Democrats that turned out to hear him
speak last Tuesday seven Democrats
to a hundred Republicans.
Senator Mitchell will address the
Hayes and Wheeler club of this city
on week from to-day. Give him a
rousing reception.
Poland's milk wagon made a lively
run down Main street last Saturday
morning. A broken dash-board was
the only injury sustained.
