A Narrow Escape. Last Wednes
day morning Mrs. Capt. Jerome, ac
companied by Mrs. Taylor and a little
child, were riding in a hitggy on the
Canemah road, when the morning
train came Hying past and scared the
horse. The animal commenced back
ing towards the river, and Mrs. Je
rome managed to get Mrs. Tavlor and
the child out before the carriage touch
ed the bank, and she only jumped out
when the hind wheels were goiugover.
The horse became ' entangled in the
harness and was drowned. If it had
not been for the wonderful presence of
mind displayed by Mrs. Jerome the
whole party would have most likely
been carried over the bank into the
rushing water, and all drowned, as no
one was near to render any assistance.
The buggy and harness we're saved.
Jua Them. A prominent citizen in
forms us that four young bo3's, a bot
tle ot whisky and a lighted lantern
were located in the barn in the rear of
the M. E, Church last Saturday night,
and people living in that vicinity were
unable to sleep on account of the noise
kept up by the drunken hoodlums.
It is almost a miracle that they did not
set the barn on tire, as they were tum
bling over the hay with their lantern,
Their names have leen given us for
publication.but we refrain until the
the next time.
Proposed Division. We understand
a petition has been presented to the
Legislature by many citizens, praying
for a division of Clackamas County. It
is proposed to cut off the northern part
of the county and add it to Multnomah.
Senator Myers wants to know the wish
es of the people in the matter. What
are you going to do about it? Be up
and doing!
Runaway. Last Saturday one of
our farmers left his' team standing on
Main St. without taking the precaution
to tie them. The horses desiring to
look around town, went up the street
at a rapid pace, and Louis Jaggars im
agining that they werj running away
stopped them in front of the Factory.
Tight ! In order to conform to the
latest mode in the way of dresses all
underclothing has to be done away
with, and the person forced into glove
fitting tights of chamois leather. We
don't advise our young luly readers
to follow this latest style, but, of
course, they will suit themselves.
Lectures. Mrs. L. Sh'cpard lectured
at the Y. M. C. A. Rooms on Monday

Always Growling.
Editor Enterprise: The name
of Senator Mitchell seems to affect
the EJitorof the Oreyoniau as water
is popularly supposed to affect ani
mals afflicted with hydrophobia.
No sooner does that name meet the
editor's eye than he goes into con
vulsions and snarls and snaps at a
rate that should cause his friends
some concern. The other day it was
stated in the associated press dis
patches that the Senator had been
invited to make some political speech
es in Ohio, which bit of news threw
the editor into a spasm, the effect
of which was quite apparent in the
same issue of the paper in which the
dispatch appeared; but on learning
that Mitchell had the assurance to
address the people of Ashland a few
days since he relapsed into a condi
tion which must certainly occasion
his friends much uneasiness.
It was but a few months since that
the mention of Judge Williams.narae
liaJ a similar effect upon the said
editor, but there are present hopeful
symptoms of a partial recovery in
that quarter.
