Molalla Mines.
For the benefit of tliose persons who
are contemplating a visit to the newly
discovered copper mines on the head
waters of Molalla river, I will give a
brief sketch of a trip to that place Lit
week: My experience was that there
aretwo ways of getting there walking
or riding and wo took the latter
method. Our party consisted of my
self and partner, and we were the
jolliest crowd that ever left the L,owell
of the Pacific Coast, even if I do say it
in3'self.
Wo went by the way of Soda Springs,
which was a lovely place to take an
hour s sleep, after riding over twenty
miles. Here we found Gov. D. P.
Thompson and ITon. Jos. Smith, who
wore recruiting their shattered health.
We indulged in a drink or two of this
justly celebrated water, and it is need
less to say that it had no .serious effect
upon any of our party.
From the Soda Springs the road goes
for about live miles over a good wagon
road, after this the trail up the moun
tains cminiences, and the difficulties
to travel appear in the shape of logs
scattered in all directions, and it takes
a good pony to m?ke the necessary
jumps to tret over the logs.
We passed Klk Prairie, a place which
probably received its name on account
of elk, that may have wintered there in
by-gone years, but as tor prairio it
would be impossible to detect the
slightest excuse for such a name. We
camped on this prairie (?) for the
night. After dismounting we found a
stitl'ness in our joints, which wo were
uncharitable enough to conclude was
the elfccts of indulging too frcelv in
soda water at tlie Springs. The follow
ing dav we arrived at our destination
the Molalla bon anz.i-and after dispos
ing of our horses, we commenced
searching for the copper lead. After
exploring the -. reek for some time, we
came across a written notice informing
us, fthi-.t the claimants, (5 in number,
claimed 1,50:) feet of the Imperial I,edge,
on Centennial creek, and we knew 'by
this that we were in the right place and
we determined to find the lead or bust.
O.ir elforts were at l ist rewarded, bv
finding a place where some of ti e
seams of the bed rock had been opened,
and indications of copper found. Those
seams vary in thickness from a fourth
to half an inch, all along the creek for
several miles, indicating that a lead
may be found within a few miles in
any direction.
1 wish the company success, but we
concluded that we had seen enough to
satisfy us in regard to the prospects,
and went fishing for trout. Next morn
ing we started for home by the same
route, stopping at the Spring for rest
and more sotbi. The "round trip is
about 121 miles, and is just tlie thing for
those looking for health or fun,' but
don'tdrink too much soda water.

crutches. Two of my sisters were with

Our. fun loving citizens had quite a
treat last Tuesday in the shape of a
regular "set to." The first round
ended in a fall for oneof the gladiators ;
the second round was finished bv his
head being bumped against a post, bv
the one whose eve was being gouged
out. At this important moment in the
contest, "lime" was called, and the two
shoulder strikers were led out of the
ring.

ing young ladies who visited our city
a few weeks since: " Miss Klva Hrey

sician and a very agreeable young lady,
and will prove a valuable acquisition

Tal.le Rock, re turned home last week,
after, as they say, a very successful war
against the bear and deer. They report
killing two " bars" and one deer, and
the smaller game they couldn't enum
erate. As a sample of their inarkman
ship, we only say that Mo., Dr. and
Dave fired six times at a grouse about
twenty yards distant, and the bird left
in disgust. They had a splendid time,
and are in good health.

Rare Chance. Mr. Fj. A. Quinn, of
Norton's post-office in this county, has
