Hahp Times. For the number ot
inhabitants, we think Oregon City can
boast of more croakers and individuals
who, figuratively, shed tears over
"hard times" than any other place in
the State. Any tirst-c-'ass show as was
the California minstrel troupe, for in
stance cannot summon a "corporal's
guard" to witness it,"hard times" being
the lachrymable excuse. Week after
week we endeavor to impress upon our
eo pie the advisability of advertising
m, subscribing for, and otherwise pat
ronizing their county paper, but are
inevitably met by the coward's last
"resort, "hard times." One night last
week a notorious fraud, and "bilk" of
the very first water, under the pretense
of se nig pens, started a barefaced
swindling lotted game in our streets
and within two hours had won over
O froin "r ioverty stricken people.
It is true the individual in question
sold pens, but the "hard times" criers
were the worst sold of all. It is a poor
encomium on the intelligence, in fact
on the ordinary sagacity of our people
that when offered full value for their
. money they become intensely econom
ical, ami when a swindler presents him

and mirth were in order. A errand ball I
was given at the Opera House, which
was crowded with merry dancers, who
tripped the light fantastic until about
5 oclock next morning. The affair was
a success in every particular and re
flects much credit on Mr. Sanborn, the
chairman of the Centennial committee.
We cannot say too much in praise of
the people of Albany for the hospi

hands, and we will ever remember this
pleasant affair.

the many attractions will be a baby

Galena,-Messrs Hurley, McCarver,

outcropping of a rich galena ledge iust
across the Marion county line. Thev

have no doubt that thev will discover
the main ledge in a few davs. The

1 1 v m en i a t . On last Wednesday af
ternoon a marriage took place at the
residence of Mr. Jas. Chase, between
Mr. 11. I). Wilson, of Albany, and Miss
JIattio Hughes, of this citv. Xo couple
ever started on life's journey under
more favorable auspices, or with more
real, hearts' good wishes for success in
life. We had expected to keep Rob in
the bachelors ranks for many a long
year yet, but of course he knows what
is best. Albany will be the future
home of the newly married couple.
Off for the Centennial. Two by
two they are departing, all the friends
we ever knew. This time it is Mr. J.
. Ward, our affable conntv treasnrei-
and Miss Mary Shaw, daughter of Mr.
Jellerson Shaw, who were married last
Wednesday at the residence of the
bride's father. We. in common with
their many friends, wish them much
happiness, and hope theirtroubles may
all be small ones. The happy couple
take their departure on the "John E.

see the Centennial.
The beauty and symmetry of tho
new freight combination was nicely
illustrated in the ensj of tho Oregon
City Woolen Mills last week, who had
40 tons ot wool brought from San Fran

the freight from Portland to Oregon
City on the same lot vas $1H. Surely
we are living in a progressive age, but
according to tho Standard in its article
on Freight last week, it is all right.

Traclcrs! Attention!
You cannot have a better "vado te

Stomach Ritters. That prime mcdici
nal agent will enable you to drink
brackish water without running the
risk of disordered stomach and 1kwc1s,
will neutralize the influence of foul
or miasmatic air, and will prove a most
agreeable and wholesome stimulant
and means ofcounteracting the fatigues
of traveling. On long sea voj'agcs,
where the crew's of whaling or other
vessels are almost wholly restricted to
salt meat, it has proved an admirable
preventative of scurvy, and in the
trophical seas it saves the sailor from
ship fever and malaria. It has proved
the surest reliance of the emigrant, ex
posed to the miasmatic complaints
which prevail in regions of country
newly cleared of timber, where the
rays of the sun falling on stagnant
vegetation, unexiKi.sed to them perhaps
since the creation, exhale vapors, laden
with the seeds of disease.
Acclimation, or the habituation of the

Letter from a I'ust master.
"Antioch, III., Dec. 1, 1S71.
"Messrs. .T. R. 11 ihE t Co.,
"My wife has, for a iong time, been a
terrible;sunerer from Rheumatism. She has
tried many physicians and many reme
dies. The only tiling which has given her
relief is Centaur Liniment. I am rejoiced
to say this has cured her. I am doing what
I can to extend its sale.
W. II. RING.
This is a sample of many thousand testi
monials received, of wonderful cures ef
feated by the Centaur Liniment. The in
gredients of this article sire published
around each bottle. It contains Witch
Hazel, Mentha, Arnica, nock Oil, Carbolic,
and ingredients hitherto lit ttlo known. It
is an indisputable fact that the Centaur
Liniment is performing more cures of
Swellings, Stiff Joirts, Kruptions, Rheu
matism, Xcuralgia.Sciatica, Caked Breasts
Lock-jaw, etc., than all other Liniments,
Embrocatious Extracts, Salves, Ointments
and Plasters now in use.
For Toothache, Karaeh, Weak Back, Itch
and Cutaneous Eruptions it is aumirauie.
It cures burns and scalds without a sear.
Extracts poison from bites and stings, and
heals frost-bites and chillblains in a phort
time. No family can afford to be without
the Centaur Liniment, white wrapper.
Tlie Ontuiir Iiiiimeiit, Yellow
Wrapper, is adapted to the tough skin,
muscles and flesh of the animal creation.
Its effects upon severe cases of Spavin.
Sweeny, Wind Gall, l'.ig Head and Toll
Evil, are little less than marvellous.
Messrs. J. MeClure $: Co., Druggists, cor.
Elm and Front Sts., Cincinnati, O., say :
"In our neighborhood a number of team
sters are using the Ccn aur Liniment.
They pronounce it superior to anything
they have ever used. We sell as high as
four to five dozen bottles per month to
these teamsters."
We have thousands of similar testimo
nials. For Wounds, Galls, Seratches.Rlng-bone,
ttc, and for Screw Worm in Sheep' it has
no rival. Farmers, Livery-men, and
Stock-raisers, have in this Liniment a
remedy which is worth a hundred times
its cost.
