three miles from Dubuque, was en

were killed and drowned; 31 bodies
have been recovered.
The damage in the city of Du

months. It is impossible to estimate
the loss.
A dispatch from Des Moines says
the storm extended throughout: most
of central Iowa, and was terrific in
effect; that some 23 persons were
killed in Warren county alone; that
six or eight were killed in Madison
county; that probably GO houses were
completely destroyed, and the de
struction of crops, fences and animals
was immense. The killed are mostly
wives and children of farmers.
Chicago, July 7. A Des Moines
special gives further details of the
terrible tornado, which are much
worse than first repotted. Many
families are left without clothing and
the scene is heartrending. Mrs. J.

Greaves, Mrs. Delay, Samuel l'ulz
and wiTe, and Mrs. Snowmosly, were
badly injured. Keports from other
parts of Warren county show that
the storm was general and disastrous.
About fifty houses were blown away
and their inmates killed or badily
hurt. From Madison, Iowa, reports
are equilly disastrous. Ileports
