this school, after it had boon temporar

books were sent out from the Fast

4 and the school was started with line
v prospects, considering the distance
fcfrom civilization and the condition of
J'hts now prosperous tate at that time.
The school was afterward in charge of
t Pi of. J. D. Post for a few years, but no
endowment being provided, the effort

Oregon. City " Falls."
Not ill v conl.l I watch this "water fall"
Hour after hour; not vainly day by
ilav,
Visit the spot to meditate and pray.
The charm that holds me in its giant
thrall,
lias too much of the infinite to pal!.
For though, like lime, the waters pass
away,
Thev lihiiC a freshness, a baptismal
spray.
Which breathes of the eternal fount
of all.
And so, my God, does Thy revealed
word,
In living dogma or on sacred page.
Flow to us ever new; though read and
heard
Immutably the same from age to age.
And thither Nature sends u.s to assuage
The higher longings by her voices
stirred. Idea.
Mr.sicAr.. The Salem Statesman, of
the 10th in.st, lias the following compli
mentary notice of MLssFmma Miller of
this city.and Mrs. Helen M. Stratton, of
Albany, who kindly tendered their ser
vices for the Musieal and Literary en
tertainment for the benefit of the "Con
gregational Church of Salem, which
took place on the evening of thc'Jth:
'Time nor space will not allow a lengths
report of the proceedings at thislate
hour, but we can conscientiously- say
the entertainment gave universal satis
faction, and we cannot forbear making
special mention of Miss EmmaMillcr's
exquisite renditions. Her two solos
"Ij.-i Separazione" and "Waiting" were
certainly the gems of the evening, the
young lady displaying rare talent as a
vocalist. She has a remarkably sweet
voice, over which she has apparently
complete control, and her debut in this
city created a most favorable impres
sion. The .same might also no said of
Airs. Helen M. Si rat ton's performance,
her name alone being sufficient guar
antee that it was a most creditable
etiort on her part."
Ij.sk !Ai,r.. We notice in the Salem
papers that the Vancouver base ball
club, the Spartans, have challenged the
College club of Salem to a friendly
eontest on the diamond field, to take
place in this city, and the Salem boys
have picked up the gauntlet.and Satur
day next, at 1 o'clock v. m., is the time
set for the game. IJoth clubs have con
siderable reputation as ball to.ssers.and
we expect one of the hottest contested
games ever witnessed in this State.
The. Mercury says that the College club
will charter a car, and it isexpectod
a lar-re party will accompany them.
The Vancouver boys have chartered a
boat for the occasion, and quite a num
ber may be expected to acconipany
theni from that city, and also from
Portland. We would suggest to somo
of the young men around town, who
have leisure lime on their hands, that
it wsnld be well to bestow a little of it
in helping to prepare the ground
for the occasion, as it is not in
the best condition, and we should feel
sorry to have our visitors finding fault
on that score when a few hours' work
will put it in good trim.
Sr.vKr.Au young ladies of this cits-,
taking advantage of (heir privilege
during this centennial leap year, invif.
ed some of the sterner sex to accom
pany them on a boating excursion last
Wednesday evening. The party went
down the river as far as Col. Ik Jen
nings', where they indulged in the
fascinating game of croquet to their
hearts' content, alter which the gay
excursionists pulled merrily away foV
home. It was a very pleasant a Hair,
and we hope the young ladies will ex
ercise the leap year prerogatives quite
often.

Last Saturday evening two littlo
boys who were playing in a boat at
Caufield's landing, managed to get
a!ri!'t. They went floating down the
river without oars anil their cries for
help soon brought a boat to the rescue.
We hope it w ill not be our lot to chroni

fellows, but if parents will not keep
them away from the river, nothing less
can be expected.
I'iun-'ipa n. Mr. W. L. Worthington,

Facts lor the Million.
The facts referred to in the above
caption are the facts in relation to the
victories over disease achieved by llos

ed tonic is daily adding fresh laurels of
popularity to the great reputation
which it long since obtained as a reme
dy for dyspepsia, constipation, bilious
ness, nervous disorder.SjUrinary trouble
intermittent and remittent fevers,
rheumatism and debility, and demon
strating to the satisfaction of the public
its superiority to the palliatives which
flood the market, and whose make-be
lieve cures are trumpeted in manufac
tured testimonials.
It is a subject of honest pride to the
proprietors of Hostetter's Fitters, that
no claims have ever been advanced in
its behalf that could not be corrobor
ated by ample proofs, but most assur
edly had such been the case they could
have expected nothing better than that
a preparation bolstered up by state

local bitters and inalcoholic rubbish,
would speedily die of inanition.
Such has been tho fate of thousands of

The success of the Filters is attribut

public has observed that what thev are
advertised to do, they do, and that no
incredible pretensions are made on
this account. They have gained, and
will continue to retain the confidence
