During the Yost murder trial at
Pottsville, Penn., recently, evidence
showing the Molly Maguire organi
zation to be little better than an or
ganized band of murderers was pre
sented. The respectable young men of
Eugene City are being raked over
for furnishing the young ladies with
a liquid stronger than water. Rake
the young ladies over! Why do
they drink it?

The rebellion in Mexico is assum
ing alarming proportion. It is re
ported that the president of the su-

Put a tea-spoonful of ammonia in
a quart of warm soap-suds, dip a
cloth in it and go over your solid
paint and see how rapid the dirt will
disappear; no scrubbing will be nec
essary. To a pint of hot suds add a
tea-spoonful of tho spirits, dip in
your forks and spoon (or whatever
you have to clean), rub with a soft
brush and then finish with a chamois
skin. For washing windows and
mirrors it has no equal. It will re
move grease spots from every fabric
without injuring the garment. Put
on tho ammonia nearly clear; lay
blotting paper over, and set a hot
iron on it for a moment. Also a
few drops in water will cleanse and
whiten laces and muslins beautifully.
A few drops iu a bowl of water, if
the skin be oily, will remove all un
easiness and disagreeable odors.
Added to a hot-bath, it entirely ab
sorbs all noxious smells, and nothing
is better to remove dandruff from the
hair. For cleaning hair and nail
brushes it is equally good. For heart
burn and dyspepsia, aromatic spirits
of ammonia is especially prepared;
ten drops, taken in a wine-glass of
water, will give relief. For house
plants, five or six drops to ever pint
of water, once a week, will make
them flourish. It is also good to
clean plant jars. So be sure and
keep a bottle of it in the house, and
have a glass stopper, as it eats away
corks.

JO UlVr 1..111S il uidiuui wealing.
Tho Iliniloo girls are graceful anil
exquisitely formed. 1 rom their
earliest childhood, says Home and
School, they are accustomed to carry
burdens on their heads. The water
for family use is always brought hy
the girls in earthen jars, carefully
poised in this way. I his exercise
is said to strengthen the muscles of
tho back, while the chest is thrown
forward. No crooked backs are seen
in Hindoostan. Dr. Henry Spry,
one of the company's medical officers,
says that "this exercise of carrying
small vessels of water on the heail
might be advantageously in
troduced into our boarding schools
aud private families, and that it
might entirely supercede the present
machinery of dumb-bells, back
boards, skipping-rones. etc. The
young lady ought to be taught to
carry the jar, as these Hindoo women
do, without ever touching it with
her hand." The same practice of
carrying water leads to precisely the
same results in tho south of Spain
and in the south of Italy as in India.
A .Nepohtan female peasant will car
ry on her head a vessel full of water
to the very brim over a rough road
and not spill a drop of it, and the
acquisition of this art or knack gives
her the same erect and elastic gait,
and the same expanded chest and
well-formed back and shoulders.
Lv a Dilemma. During theheight
of excitement in a certain church in
the western part of the city one even
ing last week, says the Leavenworth
limes, a little child about four years
old was noticed to leave its mother,
and in a noisy manner to perambulate
the various aisles as if in search of
some one. At last, giving a loud
shout of "Oh, mamma, here's papa,"
rushed into the lap of a young unmar
ried gentleman, whose feelings, it is
to be presumed, can be better im
agined than described, when it is
known that the mother of tho child
is well known to those present as a
dashing widow, to whom the young
man for some time past has been
paying considerable attention. He
did not remain until the close of the
sermon, at any rate, and for a while
more laughter than tears agitated the
congregation.
SdlEXCK AND THE HeCEXT TESTI
MONY. Gen. Schenck's most recent
testimony respecting Emma Mine
affairs reiterates his conviction that
ho has done nothing improper. If
to convince Gen. Schenck upon this
point was tho object of taking so
much superfluous evidence, it is
quite clear that the labors of the
committee nave uecn thrown away.
But on the question of the correct
ness of Mr. Lyon's testimony, com
pared with that of Messrs. Schenck
and Park, the exhibition of actual
documents, as reported in the "Wash
ington dispatches, is singularly un-
tortunate tor the ex-Alinister.
Women's Feet. A letter from an
'Anatomiot" to the Des Moines
Register, says: There is a great deal
of nonsense talked about women's.
feet. It is not enough that a foot
should be small; it must be beauti
fully proportioned as well. The
instep must be finely arched, so
that water could flow under it when
placed naked upon the ground. The
heel must be small and pink, the
ankle firm, the nails rosy, and the
processes of the bones indicated rath
er than distinctly shown. It must
present no collosities. When these
requirements are present, the size
is not of great importance, though a
detached female foot shouldnot
weigh at the outside more than two
and a half pounds.
