tho Occident, one of the W. R. T. E.
Cp.'s boats, came in tljo basin for the
purpose of unloading a quantity of
wheat for the Oregon City Mill. It
seems that the captain, contrary to the
visual custom, brought his boat in under
a full head of steam, and while passing
the bone-vard the heavy swells caused
thereby throw the little steamer Dayton
on a siiajf, knocking a hole in her bot
tom and she sank almost immediately.
On Monday three pumps were put in
her and worked from the Honanza.and

proposed to "repair Main street, be
tween 11th street and the southern line
of the Oregon City Woolen Mills, by
tilling in tlie depressions and ruts
with a coat of line stone or grave i two
thirds of the cost to be borne bv the
property holders adjacent thereto.' We
think it is high time that something of
this kind should be done. It was only
a short time since that we heard several
farmers .say they "would rather haul
their produce ten miles than to goover
our rough streets." A few dollars spent
in this way now, may le the means of
saving many in the future. The present
condition of the street is adisgrace.and
should be repaired at once.
Runaway. East Friday afternoon
the usual quietness of our town was dis
turbed hy a pair of fiery steeds, attach
ed to a wagon, dashing down Main
street at full speed. They deposited
the wagon, minus a tongue, in front of
Williams e Harding's, and were only
brought to a standstill by coming in
collision with the awning iost in front
of Prof. Polio's school room, which jvas
considerably damaged. One of the
horses had his head bunged up and
one of his legs sprained, while the
wagon escaped without any serious
damage. We understand that the team
was the property of Mr. Linn.
Social Party. The Occident Club
will give a social party at their rooms
this (Friday) evening. This is tlie sec
ond of a series to be given by the Club,
and as their tirst was one of the most
enjoyable affairs ever given in this city,
we certainly shall have no hesitation
in bespeaking a-crowded house for the
occasion. Mr. Chas. Eray'.s quadrille
band of Portland will furnish music,
and their proficiency in this line is too
well known to need any comment
from us. Ret everybody lie on band
with his girl, and a merry time may be

Mr. Prentice puts his haiid to is al

Festival. One of the most pleasant
of the many festive occasions in this
city during this season was the festival
given by the young people of the Y.
M. C. Association last Friday evening.
The attendance was not only fair, but
exceedingly .good-humored and order
ly. Financially ind otherwise it was a
success. We hope this will not be the
last of these social little gatherings.

and freights may be anticipated on
