the necessities of the situation were of
such a nature as to require the suspen

there is a "good time coming" yet.
RoatScnk. Lat Saturday afternoon
tho Occident, one of the W. R. T. E.
Cp.'s boats, came in tljo basin for the
purpose of unloading a quantity of
wheat for the Oregon City Mill. It
seems that the captain, contrary to the
visual custom, brought his boat in under
a full head of steam, and while passing
the bone-vard the heavy swells caused
thereby throw the little steamer Dayton
on a siiajf, knocking a hole in her bot
tom and she sank almost immediately.

P.v nr.FKKKXCE to our advertising
columns it will be seen that our City j
Fathers propose to make the long-need- i
ed improvements on .M am street. Jt is
proposed to "repair Main street, be
tween 11th street and the southern line
of the Oregon City Woolen Mills, by
tilling in tlie depressions and ruts
with a coat of line stone or grave i two
thirds of the cost to be borne bv the
property holders adjacent thereto.' We
think it is high time that something of
this kind should be done. It was only
a short time since that we heard several
farmers .say they "would rather haul
their produce ten miles than to goover
our rough streets." A few dollars spent
in this way now, may le the means of
saving many in the future. The present
condition of the street is adisgrace.and
should be repaired at once.
Runaway. East Friday afternoon
the usual quietness of our town was dis
turbed hy a pair of fiery steeds, attach
ed to a wagon, dashing down Main
street at full speed. They deposited
the wagon, minus a tongue, in front of
Williams e Harding's, and were only
brought to a standstill by coming in
collision with the awning iost in front
of Prof. Polio's school room, which jvas
considerably damaged. One of the
horses had his head bunged up and
one of his legs sprained, while the
wagon escaped without any serious
damage. We understand that the team
was the property of Mr. Linn.
Social Party. The Occident Club
will give a social party at their rooms

we certainly shall have no hesitation
in bespeaking a-crowded house for the
occasion. Mr. Chas. Eray'.s quadrille
band of Portland will furnish music,
and their proficiency in this line is too
well known to need any comment
from us. Ret everybody lie on band
with his girl, and a merry time may be
expected. Admission $1.

The Importance of Cood Habits.
Goo I habits tend to prolong life. The
laws of Nature are in perfect harmony
with those of Nature's God. Habits of
life should be regular. The animal
functions should be regularly perform
ed, sleep should not be put oil' until un
timely hours, unnecessary and de
praved excitements should bo avoided.
The observance of hygenic rules will
not, however, always suffice to rescue
a naturally delicate constitution from
wreck. When this is the case a wise
discretion should be exercised in select
ing the tonic to bo used. Hostctter's
Bitters, on accouut of the purity of
their alcoholic basis, the powerfully in
vigorating properties of tho vegetable
elements which they contain, and
their alterative efficacy, are precisely
the article required to create energy
in and restore regularity to the
feeble system, and thus 1 .reserve it
from destruction. For those disorders
which proceed from impaired digestion,
dormancy of the liver and weakness or
irritation of the bladder or kidneys, it
is a most valuable specific, and isequal
ly to lie relied upon as a preventive of
malarious fevers. Persons who sutler
from natulonce will find it an excel
lent carminative. It remedies heart
burn with far more alacrity and cer
tainty than carbonate of soda, and re
lieves nervous headache and constipa
tion with gratifying promptitude.
The Ri tiers are a jMtwerlul auxiliary

giving tone to the entire system, and
recalls "the rose tint of health" to the

also tend, through the medium of im
proved digestion, to increase the bodily
substance, and are a cipital appetizer
and after-dinner cordial.
