Indian War on Settlers !
A dispatch from Union Comity
was received by Gov. Grover this
morning, dated Dec. 20, but de
layed on account of the line Laving
been down, informing him of the
hostile conduct of the Wallowa
Chief Joseph and his wild band of
of refractory Nez Perces, in having
ordered the settlers in that Valley to
to immediately vacate their lands
and move away, with their stock and
herds; and threatening to enforce
their arbitrary order by force of
arms. Joseph is a formidable Chief
and had yvith bim 80 equipped
warriors.
Gov. Grover immediately sent tho
dispatch to Gen. Howard, and here
we present the copy of it, and cojiies
of the dispatches which den. Howard
has sent to the officer in charge at
Walla Walla:
Portland Dee. 20, 1875. To the
Commandinpc Officer at Fort Walla
Walla: E. C. Brainard, Connty
Judge, telegraphs from Union, Ore
gon, to Governor Grover, 2Sth inst.,
substantially as follows:
"The Indians in Walloyva Valley
have ordered the settlers to take their
stock off the range, using weapons to
enforce the same. They have 1G(K)
head of cattle and 100 horses now in
Innaha. The Indians have driven
them into the mountains.
"The citizens cannot subsist there.
Thev can nrotect themselves, but
patiently await the military. Delay
will be the destruction of the stock.
Prompt measures are positively nec
essary. Joseph s band Las 60 war
riors.
The Governor earnestly requests
troons to nrotect the settlers. Fur
nish Cant. Whipple a copy of this.
By command of General Howard,
H. Clay Wood,
Adjutant General.
Portland, Dec. 29, 1875.
Gov. Grover. Salem, Oregon:
Your dispatch of the 2Sth received.
Have started tyvo companies from

A Remedy that has made its Mark.
Success is the meed of excellence.
The truth of this has never been more
forcibly exemplified than by the
triumphant career of Hostetter's Stom
ach 1 Jitters. No sooner did tho people
discover the genuine merits of that su
preme invigorant and corrective than
they hastened to stamp it yvith the seal
of popularity. The press and medical
profession siieedily folloyved in tho
wake of the public, and emphatically
endorsed it. Thus from tho vo. y out

fact, and a degree of popularity yvhich
it often takes proprietary medicines
years to attain, yvas achieved almost at
a stride by the then neyv preparation.
Since that time every successive vear
has witnessed fresh accessions to the
favor with yvhich the Pitters yvere early
regarded, and theareaof its popularity
is no longer confined to the United
States, but includes tho lritih Pro
