"Don't talk quite so loud," she

"Yon are an honest man, and I will
have your name put in mo papers so
that all may know it. I'm'a hard
working widow, and if yon hadn't
brought back that money it would
have gone hard with my poor little
children."
. "If I pick up money by a stand I
always givb it up," he said. as ho sat
down on one of the stools.
"That's right that's honest," she
whispered, "draw right up here and
have some breakfast.."
lie needed no second invitation.
Tho way ho went for cold ham, fried

"Don't care fidoo," ho said, as
he jammed more ham into his month.

"Well, I'll take it now, please,'-'
she said, as he began to button his
overcoat.
"Take what?" ho asked.
"That lost money you found."
"I didn't find any! I'll be honest
with you, however, if I ever do find
any around here."
"You old liar! Didn't you say you
found a $120 bill here ?"
"No, ma'am. I said that no one
saw mo pick up such a bill here."
"Tay me for them provishuns!"
she yelled, clutching at his throat.
"I'll be honest witli you I haven't

her amazement he was a block away

ilueuce of the pulpit, and that while
our people can have the best thought
and culture of the nation and the
world brought to them they are less
inclined to go to church and listen
to preachers of the ordinary standard.
There is probably some truth in the
opinion that the pulpit has suffered
somewhat from this cause, and that a
great many persons in town and
country now stay at Lome from
church and read tho current news
papers and magazines. Yet we must
remember that this attraction of the
press does not-bear against the pul
pit only, but against all public speak
ing, and comes from the fact that it
is far easier to read speeches and
sermons than it is to go to hear them.
We must remember, too, that the
preacher often gains by this very
fact a far larger reception than of
old, and that a gifted and earnest
man is now allowed to have at once
a response such as formerly years
f "and fame only could bring, sinco a pow
erful and original sermon now Hashes
like the light into every border of
tho land, and the vision of the seer
of Tatmos is fulfilled in it, course
under the ocean, so that there is'no
moro sea" to the triumphant word.
Again, it must be e remembered
that the press docs not and cannot
do away with the need of devout and
sympathetic: fellowship, that calls for
public worship and institutional re-(
ligion. Indeed, the press itself gives
constant proof of the need of this
worship, and its types have made
church bells and the place of prayer
and preaching. With these consid
erations in view wo are warranted in
taking great satisfaction in the rela
tion .of the press to the pulpit, and
in wishing to deepen and extend the
good feeling between them.. It is
not only pleasant to think of the
circulation that is given to the most
striking utterances of the pulpit by
the press, but also to know that it is
not merely the sensational sermons
of popular preachers, but tho wise
and careful thoughts of calm and
farseeing Christian scholars, that are
reported; and that no preacher of
commanding learning and judgment
can speak upon an important topic
without having the substance of his
discourse made known to the great
public. In fact, tho secular press is
in some respects more friendly to
superior preachers than the theologi
cal press, because our daily journals
are sure to care for ideas and enter
prises that appeal to the general con
science and heart of the community
rather than for opinions and interests
that are more limited and denomina
tional. It is not well to uso exaggerated
language in any direction, or to
claim for the press wholly disinter
ested humanity, or self-sacnhcing
devotion. But it is fair to sav that.
upon the whole, its tendency is in
favor of ' justice and charity; that it
gives rogues their brand and honest
men their due; that the resultant
forces of its inlluences are in favor of
what is good and true and fair. If
it does not deal much with the in
terior of devotion and the order of
worship and church government, it
gives publicity to all interesting facts
of the religious lif of communities,
and has a great deal to do with illus
trating the ethics of religion a mat
ter which is becoming more vital
and urgent throughout the world.
low Curran Helped a Countryman
to Recover His Money.
The following anecdote of Curran,
the celebrated Irish orator, has but
recently appeared: A farmer attend
ing fair with a hundred pounds in
his pocket, took the precaution of
depositing it in the hands of the
landlord of the public house at
which he stopped, Having occasion
for it shortly afterward, he resorted
to mine host for payment. But the
landlord, too deep for the country
man, wondered what he meant, and
was quite sure no such sum had ever
been lodged in his hands by the
astonished rustic After ineffectual
appeals to the recollection, and
finally to fie honor of Bardolph, the
farmer applied to Curran for, advice.
"Have patience, my friend," sail
the counsel; "sneak to the landlord

Take a friend with von and loilm
