Doings of thk City Council. In
the City CounciT, on Monday evening,
the Committee on Fire and Water ad
vised the purchase of four hundred
feet of carbolized hose, at $1 25 a foot;
nd thereupon the Council passed a
resolution ordering that on the oin
dav of December a special election be
held to determine whether a tax of one
and a half mills shall bo levied for the
purchase of the aforesaid hose. When
) we consider that the hose is a thing
that we must have, and that the ex
penses of election anil tax collection
will not be any too small, we think it
would have been better had the Coun
cil made the needed appropriation it

Overflowed. The water has been
from two to four feet over the railroad
tiack, in tho bottom below town during
most of the past week. It was so high
. to put out the lire in the engines,
making it necessary for the engineer
to get up steam sufficient to "wade"
through, then stop and fire up again.
Fair and Parlor Entertainment.
The ladies of tho Episcopal Church will
hold a fancy fair on the evening of the
16th. In connection v.ith the fair
there will bo an entertainment given,
consisting of music, tableaux, reading,

Mercury has the following, in describ
ing thwl monument erected to the
memory of the lato John Fulton Ford:
"It is of marble, in the shape of an obe
lisk, and is ten feet six inches in height
and rests on a broad sub base of Oregon
City stone."

has been idle since a week ago last

Seven Vssels bave been built tliis
year at Port Ludlow.
The government buildings on San
Juan island w&re sold at auction last
Thursday. The buildings brought
mere nominal prices, one a3 low as
$35. The commanding officer's
quarters brought only $165. The
buildings are to be removed within
thirty days.
The body of the late Miss Fannie
Palmer, who was lost on tho Pacific,
was found, on Saturday last, among
drift, on the shore of San Juan
island. The remains were scarcely
discernible, but by a ring on the
anger were identified. Her friends
in Victoria Mere notified and her re
mains will be taken there.
A man named Urehm is in prison
at Seattle charged with attempting
to kill a hotel kfcpper named Cath-
eart, at Snohomish City.
Tort Madison is angry because a
squaw dance house lias been opened
there.
Colm.in's mill at Seattle is crowded
with San Francisco orders for lum
ber.
II. Li. Yesler is to work up a gift
enterprise in Seattle in the interest
of the Suoqualmie road.
Conpeville, "Whidby's island, is
shipping wheat to Olympia.
The Sunshine had $10,000 coin on
board for Coos Bay. She was owned
by Captains Bennett and Johnson,
Mrs. Ilanghstead and E. B. Deane.
She was insured for $10,000.
A burglar was caught at Seattle
last week. Failing to give $1,000
bonds lie was committed.
A most horrible murder was lately

The victim was a Frenchman named
Goutrie, 72 years of age, and highly
respected in his neighborhood. His
remains were found in a pile of
rubbish guarded by his faithful dog.

The steamer Tenino of the O. S.

Last week, the Board of Managers
of the Oregon Agricultural Society
called a meeting for the purpose of
looking into the finances of the . As
sociation, and to consider the olfer
of grounds made for the annual re
union of the Oregon Pioneers. W.
P. Watson, of Hood River, in the
chair, and E. M. Waite, of Salem,
Secretary. From the financial state
ment it was found that the debt of
the Society has been reduced in two
years from $11,000 to $5,500. $20,
300 were the receipts of the late
State Fair, the expenses only $10,
000. The improvements for the year
amounted to $4,500. The offer of
grounds for the Pioneer celebratfon
was favorably passed upon. It was
resolved that hay and wator be in
future kept in abundance on the fair
grounds. Mr. TV. Elliott of this
county, one of the directors of the
Society was in attendance.
