Tl .. 4 . . . af-i -jluo wuuiv conic room m this city was the sceue of a saooting af- ii-if,...nn.uii 13 -j earea may prove fatal in its results. The facts are substantially as follows: Watkins, w ho, several days since, was arrested on. the charge of adultery with the wife of Whiteman, who a few days since was convicted of the crime of mayhem on the person of this same defendant, was on trial before His Honor Jiiiljre Peebles of the county court. II. P. Boise appeared for the prosecution, and Tilmon Ford for the defense. The room, about 13x24 in size, was literally tilled with spectators. White man was seated on the witness stand a few feet to the right of the jndge, giving iu bis testimony as t' the cir cumstances that brought them to gether. The room was otherwise very quiet. Suddenly, and with out the least word of warning, Wat kins, who was seated bv t ie side of I his attorney and but about six feet distant, drew a revolver from the left inside breast pocket of his coat, and commenceil firing at Whiteman. The first shot, o" course, brought everybody to their feet Whiteman jumped from the chair and retreated behind tho crowd. Watkins mean while keepiug a range on him and firing whenever an opportunity pre sented itself, regardless of others in the room who were doing some of the liveliest dodging on record. While wheeling half way around lie had discharged his revolver four times, when A. J. Donaldson picked up an arm;ehair and struck him a crushing blow on the head, felling him to the floor. The third shot struck D. I). Ortou, of this city, a painter by trade, tho ball entering Ins face about one inch below the left temple, inflicting a wound dan gerous, if not fatal the. leaden mes ! senger lodging somewhere in tho head. Thomas Smith, the proprietor of the Chemekebi Hotel, bnvly escaped one shot, while George 13. Ho man and numerous others had a close cull. Whiteman, his intended vic tim, escaped without a scratch, al though he no doubt imagined for a moment that his time had come. It is the greatest mystery that none others were injured, the shooting be ing of the most reckless character. On being knocked down he was over powered, and Deputy Sheriff Barker at ouce arrested him, and furnished him with quarters behind the bars of tho county jail. Great excitement prevails, and the- feeling is. very strong against Watkins, avIio was out on bail at the time, and who, had he desired, might have killed his man long ago without endangering the lives of so many citizens and inno cent men.
