A meeting of the members of the
following additional particulars:
Reed, the unnatural and inhuman
father, resides on the North Yamhill
some distance from Lafayette. He
is the father of two daughters, the
oldest of whom is 19 years of age.
During the absence a few days ago
ot all the members of the family
with the exception of Reed and the
oldest daushter. the father made
improper advances toward the girl.
His infamous proposals were indig
nantly repelled by the daughter.
Failing to accomplish his incestuous
designs by gentle means, he invoked
the authority of a parent. She
defied his authority and refused to
obey, when the father drew a pistol
and threatened to shoot her dead un
less she s-jbinitted to- his wishes.
Rather than lose that which is dearer
to her than life, the resolute girl
told him to shoot, saying she would
die before submitting to such a re
volting and unnatural crime. How
ever tho licentious wretch did not
fire when baffled by his daughter,
but desisted from further efforts.
Soon after tho eldest ianghter dis
covered beyond doubt that her fa
ther was maintaining criminal rela
tions with her youngest sister, and
made complaint to the neighbors.
A. partial investigation as to the truth
of the oldest daughter's charges,-
proved beyond question that Reed
had been committing incest with the
second daughter for a long time
ever since she was 13 years of age.
A complaint was lodged against
Rsed without delay, and he .was ar
rested. A preliminary examination
was had of the case and the defend
ant held to answer before the next
grand jury for the crime of in
cest, in the sum of 2,000. Reed at
last accounts was unable to furnish
the required bonds, and was lying
in jail at Lafayette. Great indigna
tion is felt and expressed by the peo-
ole in that section of the country
over the afiair, and onr informant
states that had our neigbors got bold
of the incestuous villain before he
was placed in jail, they would un
doubtedly have dealt with him us

A Washington special says Senator
Cole, of California, who has been at
Washington attending to bnsiness
before the Geneva court, is said to
be an aspirant for position in the
Cabinet in case of Delano's removal.
The Secretary of the Treasury was
officially informed to-day of tue in
dictment of Chief Clerk Avery, and
will relieve him from duty tlfTs after
noon. His successor is not desig
uaf e-d.-
Washixgtox. July 2-3. The post
office department sent to the depart
ment of justice the names of nine
mail contractors to be prosecuted for
failing to perform the service after
their bids we e Accepted. They will
be sued for tlie difference bet.veen
their bids ami the amount paid by
the Government after recontracting,
which, on tiie 30 routes for one year,
amounted to 117,000. Tiie depart
ment will also bringcivil suits against
the contractors fordamagessustained
by the Government in providing
temporary service after their failure
to fulfill their contracts. The routes
were subsequently let for four years,
and should the Government recover
the above amounts, suits will be
commenced to recover losses for the
remaining three years.
Washington, July 22. The re
moval of District Attorney Fisher is
merely a matter of time. It takes
place on the return of his successor,
ex-Gov. Wells. He sought an inter
view last night with the President,
but did not see him. The Star says
among the numerous charges against
Fisher is one that he conducted ne
gotiations for the government in the
transfer of property necesssry for
the extension of the capitol grounds
with losses almost inexcusable. It
is charged by property holders that
Fisher, although a United States of
ficer aud acting for the government
as purchaser, made them pay for his
services in making a deed iu prices
ranging from 20 to 300 each.

that a gang of counterfeiters, with
headquarters at Barcelona, are pre
paring to issue in this city 813,000
000 of counterfeit notes of th bank
of England and bank of France.

A little son of Gideon Davidson,
of Salem, aged 11 years, was drowned
at the foot of the W. II. T. Company's
wharf on tho 20th inst., while in
swimming with other boys of about
the same age. His bodv is not vet
recovered.
A destructive fire occurred at the
town of Weston, Umatilla county,
last Thursday. A large part of the
town was destroyed.
Dr. Bunnel left Iloseburg last
week en route for S m Francisco to
purchase machinery for the Nonpa
reil cinnabar mines. This looks like
business. About 10.000 will be ex
pended, and the owners are confident
that they have the best thing in Ore
gon. The locust trees in Oakland, Doug
las county, are in full bloom for the
second time this season.
Jackson county lias warrants out
standing to the amount of G.5S7 G2,
and has 071 90 cash on hand.
Wasco county owes now only
2.0S8 90, having rer.uced her in
debtedness considerable during the
past year.
A number of wheat fields on
French Prairie, M .rion county, are
"white unto the harvest." Reapers
will start in on them this week.

chief end and aim.
