Besides mere business activity as a
direct reward of the investment, j

in such a community. The buzz of
machinery attracts strangers. It sig- i
nines enterprise ana noine resources.
It advertised a community better
than journals can do. The Moline
(111.) R.'vietr began the year with a
record of their city manufactories.
It was a compact, well written ac
count of their plow factories, paper
mills, wagon shops, tub and pail
factories, Marseilles quilt and cotton
factories, iron foundries, kc, &c,
Attractive wood-cuts represented the
productions of their shops. The ef
fort of the journalist was very cred
itable and honorable and worthy of
reward. Doubtless many read the
articles, yet a larger number merely
glance at them as a circular.
But a visit to Moline on any week
day, or a railroad ride through the
town in sight of the open shops, the
busy workmen, the various machin
ery, the car loads of material enter
ing the yards, and the car loads of
agricultural implements and other
goods going out for distribution over
the country, impress the mind more
than any description. The traveler
instantly concludes that such a town
thrives, that money circulates; that
labor is in demand; that business of
various kiinis will be 2rosperous.
Pass through any manufacturing

sachusetts, or on the Merrimac, or
on tUo rawtucket, and you will feel
a confidence in those communities

city." While San Francisco did little
muru than receive the gold and sell
the goods an;l furnish hotels for the

transferred our wholesale purchases
of ingrain, carpets from the looms of
Old to those of New England. Such
facts inspire faith in a people and a
manufacturing place that becomes

as the best security. When John
Pease moved from Vermont to Illi
nois, a simplo blacksmith, able to
make a plow, )-e attracted no partic
ular attention. But the John Dense
plow, turned out of his extensive
works at Moline, with sixty thousand
other plows and cultivators annually,
having his braad, has attained a de
servedly national fame.
When Frastus Fairbanks in 1830
began to make scales at St. Johns
bury. Vermont, he had little credit,
and the village was only a trading
post for country farmers. Now his
scales have a world-wide reputation.
Such men and such enterprises com.
mand business and money with equal
facility. What is true of them is
true of hundreds, and perhaps of
thousands, of manufacturing firms
whose goods have given a name and
a value to their towns.
One of the most damaging facts to
a town or citv is to let a manufacto-
, rv close up, tnd its machinery and
workmen to move away. Transfer a
foundry, or shoe factory, or wagon
shop to anothor place, and you de
press the business of your own place;
you lower rents and discount real
estate. The per cent, of loss, like
failing health, comes perhaps uncon
sciously but it comes. Continued long
confidence in such a town dies, and
with it hope tbe.stimulus of business
passes away. The market report and
prices current must then be taken
with ittiny grr.ins of allowauce. Bu
siness must bo galvanized often by
sensational itoms to keep it alive.
A few milk cuts and grocery wagons
and drays may rattle over tho plank
roadways; gloomy -handbill,, "To
sell or to rent," rnay stare on you
from every ot'ier tenement; or flam
ing cards of property sold at an ad
vance, may e teito a spasm of hope,
to give place to despondency when
the truth is told. Ileal estate men
sold lots in Sf.n Francisco and Oak
laud to one another at advancing
rates a few years ago, in order to
keep up the semblance of prosperity.
Such a device soon reacts and ruins,
unless a solid basis of credit is laid
in home manufactures, home work
and homo productions.
The importation of wooden ware
and utensils to a country abounding
in choice trees, or of stoves to a
country rich in the best iron ore,
surprises the thoughtful, and puts
an objection in the mind of the ob
serving immigrant which no argu
ment or -words can remove.
For a people to buy three hundred
thousand dollars worth of sacks per
year and yet burn or bury hundreds
of tons of rlax fibre, argues against
them more than words can express.
To send hides to be tanned out of i
the country COO miles, and then inv !
port the leather, or what is worse,
me coots ana shoes, when tha tan
bark, the power and the skill can be
had at our doors to give us the fin
ished goods, brings a lots upon us
which twelve or twenty per cent,
loans cannot repair.
