Oft in eve tho sun's fading beams
Spread her streaming hue
Of rosemary flush and golden streams
On the skv's lying blue ;;
And all nature prows calm and still,
And weary labor is o or ;
Mv mind floats back, unbidden will,
To the days that are no more.
And often to memory I recall
The davs that aro gone by ;
And mother, brother, sisters all,
I see drawing nigh ; '
But as oft' reality cruelly casts
J ler sombre shadow pYer ;
And the pleasant visiou is past,
Like the days that arp no more.
And friends of rny boyhood days
Ever will seem" to bo :
As bright spots and shining rays
Upon my memory ;
Though one by vne hate passed awaj',
Anil my heart growsf ore,
As it teaches my tongifl to say,
These days are no ml o.
Yet one ray on time's ling skies
Upon my soul is stiViinj?
Like heavenly smile? of maiden eyes,
That are sweetly beaming ;
But in future I strangely see
A cloud stealing o'er,
And it's precious light soon may bo
With th days that are no more.
And if her light must pale away,
And seek another sp.iere ;
May she lingering around one playi
And shed a farewell t.ar
In memory of my cruel fate ;
That my mind may siar
Far atove selfishness alul hate,
Until all aro no morA

The Detkoit Boy. The average
youth, says the Free Press, sits np
late and when G o'clock comes in the
morning he is in his soundest sleep.
The father depends on him to make
a fire, and he turns over in bod and
calls out: "Solomon, it's six o'clock!"
Boy dreams of chasirg a rabbit into
a hollow lor. and wh e he is hunt-
- - 7
ing around for an a , the old man
calls ont: "Come, Sole mon!" Boy's
dreaui changes and he thinks he is
husking corn to get n'iony to go to
Dan Bice's circus. IJe is making
the earTtly when theiold man rips
out: "Sol-o-men Spriir-book!" Boy
moves uneasily, and learns that he
is playing baso ball, a see a crowd
of admiring spectatorr seated on the
top rails of the fences. "If that boy
don't 'rouse, I'll make him think he's
sent for. Oh, Sol! Oh!" The boy
dreams ho is loafing around the
Opera House door and boring people
for "checks," and lie is about to get
one when the old man slips up, pulls
the quilts off, hammers away at him
with the hair-brush, and chuckles:
"There! I guess you won't want me
to wake yon up moi than fourteen
times more!'' As the boy pulls on
his pants and gets ino his vest he
mentally declares that he'll run away
that very day and become a pirate.
The story is told a daughter of a
imminent person, nowjin the lecture
fieM, which is peculiay interesting
and suggestive of unflnscious wis
dom. A gentleman 4.s invited to
the lecturer's house I: ' tea. Imme
diately on being at the table the lit
tle girl astonished the family circle
find the cruest by the abrupt ques
tion: " Where is your wife?" Now
the gentleman having been recently
separated from the partner of his
life, was taken so completely by sur
prise, that he stammered fortli the
truth: "I don't know." "Don't
know!" replied tho in "tut terrible,
" why don't you know?" Finding
that the child persisted in her inter
rogatories despite tho miltV, reproof
of her parents, he concluded to make
a clean breast of the majtter and have
it over at once. So he. said with a
calmness which was tha result of in
wards expletives: " Well, wo don't
live together; we think : as we can't
agree, we hal better not" He stilled
a groan as the child begin again, and
darted an exasperating ilook at her
parents. But the liAile torment
would not be quieted y Itil she ex
claimed: "Can't agnl Thcn Why
lon't yyu fight it out II ) pa and ma
do?" " Vengeance is VAe," laugh
ingly reported tho visi-or, after pa
and ma exchanged looks of holy hor
ror, followed by the inevitable roar.

On A Tear. A congregation of
